Foreword For the past six months our study of the book of Revelation has led us to examine seven churches and seven seals. Now we come to parts of the Revelation that are often confusing for many to understand. These are the seven trumpets and the beasts. What and who are they? When did they happen, or when will they happen? What impact have these trumpets and beasts had on the course of prophecy? What importance do they bear for us today? These are the questions that will occupy our attention for the next three months. The study of the trumpets is a study primarily of history. To help the student we have added a small amount of notes in the first few lessons that are historical in nature. Most of these notes are taken from Synopsis of the Present Truth by Uriah Smith. In the Preface, the author explains that the book "is the outgrowth of a series of lectures given at Biblical Institutes in various parts of the country." Ellen White gave these lectures a hearty endorsement by stating, "The plan that has been adopted, to have Elder Smith hold Biblical institutes in different states, is approved of God."–Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 407. Our study of prophecy requires us to know our history: the history of God’s people. "We are standing on the threshold of great and solemn events. Prophecies are fulfilling. Strange, eventful history is being recorded in the books of heaven–events which it was declared should shortly precede the great day of God. Everything in the world is in an unsettled state. The nations are angry, and great preparations for war are being made. Nation is plotting against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. The great day of God is hasting greatly. But although the nations are mustering their force for war and bloodshed, the command to the angels is still in force, that they hold the four winds until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads"–Selected Messages, bk. 1, pp. 221, 222. "The Lord is soon coming, and we should not put off that event. It is our present duty to prepare for the things that are coming on the earth, and to let our works correspond with our faith."–The Review and Herald, August 5, 1884.
