Principles of Separation

I. Introduction

1. Ye shall know the truth. John 8:32.

a. And the Truth shall make you free.

2. We know this truth to be Jesus Christ. John 14:6.

a. "Christ is the complete system of truth." Vol. 3, Selected Messages, p. 198:5.

3. How can we understand the complete system of truth? John 16:13.

a. The Holy Spirit will guide us into ALL Truth.

b. Although "Christ is the complete system of truth," there are special aspects of truth for our day. 2 Peter 1:12.

(1) These truths are called Present Truth.

c. Who is at the forefront of receiving present truth today? Who is the most receptive of the voice of the Holy Spirit guiding into all truth? 1 Timothy 3:15.

(1) The Holy Spirit guides us into ALL truth.

(2) The Church of God is the Pillar and ground of the truth.

(3) Among the major points of the truth that the Holy Spirit guides us into is Christ’s church.

4. This church Christ reestablished in Matthew 16:16-19.

a. Why is it so important to find the true church? Matthew 18:17,18.

(1) The church of God has authority to bind or loose.

(2) What about forgiveness of sins? John 20:22,23.

(a) That church which is directed by the Holy Spirit has this authority.

b. Therefore it is important to understand who the true church of God is.

5. What does the Greek word for church (ekklesia) mean? # 1577 = a calling out.

a. The very idea of the word "church" gives the meaning of separation.

6. What are some possibilities when there are differing views in a church?

a. Reasoning together. Isaiah 1:18,19; Acts 1:13,14.

b. What other possibilities? 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Amos 3:3.

7. Separation in the Laodicean Message. Revelation 3:14-22.

a. To whom is this letter first addressed? Revelation 3:14—angel.

(1) Who does this angel represent? Revelation 1:20.

(a) 7 stars = 7 angels.

(b) Stars = the ministry. "God’s ministers are symbolized by the seven stars, which He who is the first and the last has under His special care and protection." Gospel Workers, p. 13:3

(c) "In His hand are seven stars, representing the ministers of the churches. Out of His mouth issues a sharp, two-edged sword, an emblem of the power of His word." Sanctified Life, p. 78:0.

b. To whom specifically is this letter addressed? "As I have of late looked around to find the humble followers of the meek and lowly Jesus, my mind has been much exercised. Many who profess to be looking for the speedy coming of Christ are becoming conformed to this world and seek more earnestly the applause of those around them than the approbation of God. They are cold and formal, like the nominal churches from which they but a short time since separated. The words addressed to the Laodicean church describe their present condition perfectly. (See Revelation 3:14-20.) They are ‘neither cold nor hot,’ but ‘lukewarm’." Early Writings, pp. 107-108.

(1) This letter is especially addressed to what became known as the ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist church.

(a) What was their condition? Revelation 3:15,17.

(2) What Warning is given? Revelation 3:16.

(a) Can this be a possibility? "And unless they heed the counsel of the ‘faithful and true Witness,’ and zealously repent and obtain ‘gold tried in the fire,’ ‘white raiment,’ and ‘eye-salve,’ He will spew them out of His mouth." Early Writings, p. 108:0.

(b) The destiny of the church depends on its response to this message. "I saw that the testimony of the True Witness has not been half heeded. The solemn testimony upon which the destiny of the church hangs has been lightly esteemed, if not entirely disregarded. This testimony must work deep repentance; all who truly receive it will obey it and be purified." Early Writings, p. 270:3.

(3) What is the meaning of spewing out? "To those who are indifferent at this time Christ’s warning is: ‘Because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of My mouth.’ Revelation 3:16. The figure of spewing out of His mouth means that He cannot offer up your prayers or your expressions of love to God. He cannot endorse your teaching of His word or your spiritual work in anywise. He cannot present your religious exercises with the request that grace be given you." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 408:2.

(a) He cannot offer your prayers.

(b) He cannot offer your expressions of love to God.

(c) He cannot endorse your teachings of His word.

(d) He cannot endorse your spiritual work in any wise.

(e) He cannot present your religious exercises for needed grace.

(4) This will be the sad condition of the ministry and evangelistic outreach of the Seventh-day Adventist church if they refuse the counsel in Revelation 3:18-20.

(a) We will not study this part at present.

8. The church who receives the ire of the dragon. Revelation 12:14-17.

a. 1260 years of persecution. Revelation 12:14,15.

(1) Ending in 1798.

b. Who helps the woman—the Protestant churches at that time? Revelation 12:16.

(1) This is the same earth out of which arises the beast with lamb like-horns. Revelation 13:11. ("But the beast with lamblike horns was seen ‘coming up out of the earth.’ Instead of overthrowing other powers to establish itself, the nation thus represented must arise in territory previously unoccupied and grow up gradually and peacefully. It could not, then, arise among the crowded and struggling nationalities of the Old World—that turbulent sea of ‘peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.’ It must be sought in the Western Continent.

"What nation of the New World was in 1798 rising into power, giving promise of strength and greatness, and attracting the attention of the world? The application of the symbol admits of no question. One nation, and only one, meets the specifications of this prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America. Again and again the thought, almost the exact words, of the sacred writer has been unconsciously employed by the orator and the historian in describing the rise and growth of this nation. The beast was seen ‘coming up out of the earth;’ and, according to the translators, the word here rendered ‘coming up’ literally signifies ‘to grow or spring up as a plant.’ And, as we have seen, the nation must arise in territory previously unoccupied. A prominent writer, describing the rise of the United States, speaks of ‘the mystery of her coming forth from vacancy,’ and says: ‘Like a silent seed we grew into empire.’—G. A. Townsend, The New World Compared With the Old, page 462. A European journal in 1850 spoke of the United States as a wonderful empire, which was ‘emerging,’ and ‘amid the silence of the earth daily adding to its power and pride.’—The Dublin Nation. Edward Everett, in an oration on the Pilgrim founders of this nation, said: ‘Did they look for a retired spot, inoffensive for its obscurity, and safe in its remoteness, where the little church of Leyden might enjoy the freedom of conscience? Behold the mighty regions over which, in peaceful conquest, . . . they have borne the banners of the cross!’—Speech delivered at Plymouth, Massachusetts, Dec. 22, 1824, page 11." Great Controversy, p. 440:1, 2).

(2) This woman is clearly the Protestant churches.

(3) In Revelation 12:17 the dragon is wroth with the woman (Protestant churches.)

(a) But with whom does he make war?

(b) The woman; seed of the woman; or the remnant of her seed.

[1] Who are the seed of Protestantism? Adventism.

(c) He makes war only upon the Remnant of Adventism.

(4) What is the character of that Remnant? Revelation 12:17.

(a) They keep the commandments == all the commandments.

(b) They have the testimony of Jesus == Spirit of Prophecy. Revelation 19:10.

(c) For this reason the true church will not cringe in using the Testimonies in meetings. "Some, I was shown, could receive the published visions, judging of the tree by its fruits. Others are like doubting Thomas; they cannot believe the published Testimonies, nor receive evidence through the testimony of others; but must see and have the evidence for themselves. Such must not be set aside, but long patience and brotherly love should be exercised toward them until they find their position and become established for or against. If they fight against the visions, of which they have no knowledge; if they carry their opposition so far as to oppose that in which they have had no experience, and feel annoyed when those who believe that the visions are of God speak of them in meeting, and comfort themselves with the instruction given through vision, the church may know that they are not right. God’s people should not cringe and yield, and give up their liberty to such disaffected ones. God has placed the gifts in the church that the church may be benefited by them; and when professed believers in the truth oppose these gifts, and fight against the visions, souls are in danger through their influence, and it is time then to labor with them, that the weak may not be led astray by their influence." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 328-329.

II. Two Separations Prophesied in the SDA Church One Before Latter Rain, Other AFTER!

1. Advent Movement began on a prophecy of Daniel 8:14.

a. Those who accepted this prophecy, in 1844 after the disappointment, formed God’s true church.

b. What made them God’s church? "The Pharisees had declared themselves the children of Abraham. Jesus told them that this claim could be established only by doing the works of Abraham. The true children of Abraham would live, as he did, a life of obedience to God. They would not try to kill One who was speaking the truth that was given Him from God. In plotting against Christ, the rabbis were not doing the works of Abraham. A mere lineal descent from Abraham was of no value. Without a spiritual connection with him, which would be manifested in possessing the same spirit, and doing the same works, they were not his children.

"This principle bears with equal weight upon a question that has long agitated the Christian world,—the question of apostolic succession. Descent from Abraham was proved, not by name and lineage, but by likeness of character. So the apostolic succession rests not upon the transmission of ecclesiastical authority, but upon spiritual relationship. A life actuated by the apostles’ spirit, the belief and teaching of the truth they taught, this is the true evidence of apostolic succession. This is what constitutes men the successors of the first teachers of the gospel." Desire of Ages, 466:6-467:1.

(1) It is truth that is infallible, not a church. "Ministers who have preached the truth with all zeal and earnestness may apostatize and join the ranks of our enemies, but does this turn the truth of God into a lie? ‘Nevertheless,’ says the apostle, ‘the foundation of God standeth sure.’ The faith and feelings of men may change; but the truth of God, never. The third angel’s message is sounding; it is infallible." Vol. 4, Testimonies for the Church, p. 595:2.

2. As a result of the truth organization came. They realized that without some form of organization they would be scattered, etc.

a. Organization is indispensable, but truth is above organization.

b. Truth came first, then organization. It was not organization, then truth.

3. In the history of the Advent Movement, even before they were organized as a church, they reached a Laodicean condition. "The words addressed to the Laodicean church describe their present condition perfectly." Early Writings, pp. 107-108.

a. The only hope of the church at that time was to accept the counsel of the True witness.

b. The Condition of the church was cold and formal just like the nominal churches of which they but a short time before had separated.

c. In 1852, they were in an already backsliding condition. This condition increased.

A. Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 101:2.

"The pure and the base metal are now so mingled that only the discerning eye of the infinite God can with certainty distinguish between them. But the moral magnet of holiness and truth will attract together the pure metal, while it will repel the base and counterfeit."

1. To whom do these words apply? "‘The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly;’ but where do we behold the true advent spirit? Who are preparing to stand in that time of temptation which is just before us? The people to whom God has entrusted the sacred, solemn, testing truths for this time are sleeping at their post. They say by their actions: We have the truth; we are ‘rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;’ while the True Witness declares: Thou ‘knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.’

"With what fidelity do these words portray the present condition of the church: ‘Knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.’ Messages of warning, dictated by the Holy Spirit, are borne by the servants of God, defects of character are presented before the erring; but they say: ‘That does not represent my case. I do not accept the message you bring. I am doing the best I can. I believe the truth.’" Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 101:3, 4.

a. "present condition of the church."

2. We see that the pure and base metal are mingled in the Seventh-day Adventist church (1882).

a. They are so mingled together that only the eye of the infinite God can differentiate between them.

b. In the church there were two classes of people mingled together.

(1) The pure metal and the base metal.

(2) They were so mingled together at that time that no one could distinguish between them except the eye of God.

(3) Will it remain that way till the end? "But the moral magnet of holiness and truth will attract together the pure metal, while it will repel the base and counterfeit." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 101:2.

3. What will be introduced? The moral magnet of holiness.

a. What will the magnet attract? The pure metal.

b. What will it repel? The base and counterfeit metal.

(1) Works with iron and brass or bronze.

4. IS THIS A SEPARATION?????????

a. Therefore a separation is predicted in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

B. Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 136:1.

** In the same year she stated the situation. "‘And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.’ The very atmosphere is polluted with sin. Soon God’s people will be tested by fiery trials, and the great proportion of those who now appear to be genuine and true will prove to be base metal. Instead of being strengthened and confirmed by opposition, threats, and abuse, they will cowardly take the side of the opposers. The promise is: ‘Them that honor Me I will honor.’ Shall we be less firmly attached to God’s law because the world at large have attempted to make it void?"

1. This is speaking of God’s people.

a. Who were God’s people in 1882? Seventh-day Adventist church.

2. The Seventh-day Adventist church will be tested by fiery trials.

3. Those who appear to be genuine and true will prove to be base metal (greatest proportion).

a. So when we speak of pure metal and base metal, we refer to pure members and base members.

(1) They will be distinguished by the tests of fiery trials/moral magnet of holiness.

(2) What specifically will be our test? "When the religion of Christ is most held in contempt, when His law is most despised, then should our zeal be the warmest and our courage and firmness the most unflinching. To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsake us, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few—this will be our test. At this time we must gather warmth from the coldness of others, courage from their cowardice, and loyalty from their treason. The nation will be on the side of the great rebel leader." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 136:2.

(a) The majority forsake "us."

(b) There is the majority side and the "us" side. She is part of the minority.

C. 1888 Session and its Aftermath

1. Six years later, at the 1888 General Conference Session (Minneapolis), of those present there were formed three classes:

a. Some Rejected.

b. Some accepted.

c. Others stood neutral.

(1) The neutral position did not last long.

(2) Soon two classes formed but still in the same church.

(3) Among the notorious names of those who rejected were Uriah Smith and L. R. Conradi.

(a) Uriah Smith later accepted: "We can easily count the first burden bearers now alive [1902]. Elder [Uriah] Smith was connected with us at the beginning of the publishing work. He labored in connection with my husband. We hope always to see his name in the Review and Herald at the head of the list of editors; for thus it should be. Those who began the work, who fought bravely when the battle went so hard, must not lose their hold now. They are to be honored by those who entered the work after the hardest privation had been borne.

"I feel very tender toward Elder Smith. My life interest in the publishing work is bound up with his. He came to us as a young man, possessing talents that qualified him to stand in his lot and place as an editor. How I rejoice as I read his articles in the Review --so excellent, so full of spiritual truth. I thank God for them. I feel a strong sympathy for Elder Smith, and I believe that his name should always appear in the Review as the name of the leading editor. Thus God would have it. When, some years ago, his name was placed second, I felt hurt. When it was again placed first, I wept, and said, ‘Thank God.’ May it always be there, as God designs it shall be, while Elder Smith’s right hand can hold a pen. And when the power of his hand fails, let his sons write at his dictation." Vol. 2, Selected Messages, p. 225:2, 3

(b) "You seem to have special bitterness against Elder [Uriah] Smith, and some others of our brethren, and you have talked out these feelings in your family, thus leavening them. The Lord has seen fit to counsel Elder Smith, to give him words of reproof because he had erred; but is this an evidence that God has forsaken him?—No. ‘As many as I love I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent’ (Revelation 3:19). The Lord reproves wrongs in His people, but is this an evidence that He has rejected them?—No. There are errors in the church, and the Lord points them out by His own ordained agencies, not always through the testimonies. Now shall we seize these reproofs and make capital of them, and say that God is not imparting to them His light and love?—No. The very work that God is trying to do for them shows that He loves them, and wants to draw them away from paths of danger." Vol. 2, Selected Messages, p. 81-82.

b. Conradi never changed his mind. Movement of Destiny, p. 678 gives the account of Conradi’s beliefs and convictions. Because Ellen G. White supported Jones and Waggoner, he opposed her and the Spirit of Prophecy.

2. What proportion were pure and what proportion were base metal? (1893) "It is a solemn statement that I make to the church, that not one in twenty whose names are registered upon the church books are prepared to close their earthly history, and would be as verily without God and without hope in the world as the common sinner. They are professedly serving God, but they are more earnestly serving mammon. This half-and-half work is a constant denying of Christ, rather than a confessing of Christ. So many have brought into the church their own unsubdued spirit, unrefined; their spiritual taste is perverted by their own immoral, debasing corruptions, symbolizing the world in spirit, in heart, in purpose, confirming themselves in lustful practices, and are full of deception through and through in their professed Christian life. Living as sinners, claiming to be Christians! Those who claim to be Christians and will confess Christ should come out from among them and touch not the unclean thing, and be separate. . . ." Christian Service, p. 41:1.

a. Less than 5% are pure. More than 95 % are base metal.

b. In 1893 what call was made to the General Conference Session? Christian Service, p. 41:1.

Be Separate!!!!!

D. Lesson From Christ.

"The Sanhedrin had rejected Christ’s message and was bent upon His death; therefore Jesus departed from Jerusalem, from the priests, the temple, the religious leaders, the people who had been instructed in the law, and turned to another class to proclaim His message, and to gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations." Desire of Ages, p 232:1.

1. The Sanhedrin rejected His message.

2. He departed from Jerusalem, priests, temple, religious leaders, and people.

3. He turned to another class.

a. Why turn to this class? "Gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations." Prepare them for their world wide work.

4. This lesson is applicable to us today. "As the light and life of men was rejected by the ecclesiastical authorities in the days of Christ, so it has been rejected in every succeeding generation. Again and again the history of Christ’s withdrawal from Judea has been repeated. When the Reformers preached the word of God, they had no thought of separating themselves from the established church; but the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it were forced to seek another class, who were longing for the truth. In our day few of the professed followers of the Reformers are actuated by their spirit. Few are listening for the voice of God, and ready to accept truth in whatever guise it may be presented. Often those who follow in the steps of the Reformers are forced to turn away from the churches they love, in order to declare the plain teaching of the word of God. And many times those who are seeking for light are by the same teaching obliged to leave the church of their fathers, that they may render obedience." Desire of Ages, p. 232:2.

a. One group is forced to turn away from their churches.

b. Another group is obliged to leave.

5. This separation was before the 490 years were expired at the stoning of Stephen.

a. The purpose of separation was to gather out a group that would carry the gospel to all nations.

b. The Saviour began the first steps in organization. (Luke 6:12,13; "The first step was now to be taken in the organization of the church that after Christ’s departure was to be His representative on earth. No costly sanctuary was at their command, but the Saviour led His disciples to the retreat He loved, and in their minds the sacred experiences of that day were forever linked with the beauty of mountain and vale and sea." Desire of Ages, p. 291:2.)

(1) Meanwhile the Jewish church still had a period of grace left.

(2) True Reformations follow the same process. Ecclesiastes 1:9; "The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking similarity in every great reformation or religious movement. The principles of God’s dealing with men are ever the same. The important movements of the present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of the church in former ages has lessons of great value for our own time." Great Controversy, p. 343:1.

(3) Why was Jesus forced to do this? John 8:32-41.

"The only condition upon which the freedom of man is possible, is that of becoming one with Christ. ‘The truth shall make you free;’ and Christ is the truth. Sin can triumph only by enfeebling the mind, and destroying the liberty of the soul. Subjection to God is restoration to one’s self,—to the true glory and dignity of man. The divine law, to which we are brought into subjection, is ‘the law of liberty.’

Without a spiritual connection with him, which would be manifested in possessing the same spirit, and doing the same works, they were not his children."

This is what constitutes men the successors of the first teachers of the gospel." Desire of Ages, pp. 466:6-467:1.

E. Unity and Separation—Seventh-day Adventist Church.

"As trials thicken around us, both separation and unity will be seen in our ranks. Some who are now ready to take up weapons of warfare will in times of real peril make it manifest that they have not built upon the solid rock; they will yield to temptation. Those who have had great light and precious privileges, but have not improved them, will, under one pretext or another, go out from us. Not having received the love of the truth, they will be taken in the delusions of the enemy; they will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and will depart from the faith." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 400-401. (1900)

1. Who separates? Those ready to take up weapons of warfare.

a. They will yield to temptation.

b. Who are they? Those who in 1900 were willing to take up weapons of warfare.

(1) Is this literal guns? See Chapter title on p. 394:0 (Our Attitude Toward the Civil Authorities).

(2) "Elder L.R. Conradi was the President of the European Division in the time of the first world war. He led the church into open apostasy because his personal conviction was wrong. Many years before that time he declared his opinion on the military question to Elder Butler, in a letter, as follows:

"‘…After a long struggle, the Baptists are not tolerated, and their preachers have full liberty to preach. They had to admit the bearing of arms, and we have to do the same if we are ever tolerated here…’ Review and Herald, Oct. 12, 1886." In Defense of the Law of God, p. 26:4, 5.

2. When does the first separation takes place in Seventh-day Adventist Church? "As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them." Great Controversy, p. 608:2.

a. A storm is the same as a tempest = seven last plagues ("If such scenes as this are to come, such tremendous judgments on a guilty world, where will be the refuge for God’s people? How will they be sheltered until the indignation be overpast? John sees the elements of nature—earthquake, tempest, and political strife—represented as being held by four angels. These winds are under control until God gives the word to let them go." Testimonies to Ministers, p. 444:3)

(1) This is the same as the four winds.

b. At this point the storm is approaching but is not there yet.

(1) Approaching storm means that it has not yet arrived.

(a) An example of this is in Hebrews 10:25.

(2) When did Sister White say the storm was already approaching? "The youth should seek God more earnestly. The tempest is coming, and we must get ready for its fury by having repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord will arise to shake terribly the earth. We shall see troubles on all sides. Thousands of ships will be hurled into the depths of the sea. Navies will go down, and human lives will be sacrificed by millions. Fires will break out unexpectedly, and no human effort will be able to quench them. The palaces of earth will be swept away in the fury of the flames. Disasters by rail will become more and more frequent; confusion, collision, and death without a moment’s warning will occur on the great lines of travel. The end is near, probation is closing. Oh, let us seek God while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near! The prophet says: ‘Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought His judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.’—The Signs of the Times, April 21, 1890." Messages to Young People, p. 89-90 (1890).

(a) "More and more, as the days go by, it is becoming apparent that God’s judgments are in the world. In fire and flood and earthquake He is warning the inhabitants of this earth of His near approach. The time is nearing when the great crisis in the history of the world will have come, when every movement in the government of God will be watched with intense interest and inexpressible apprehension. In quick succession the judgments of God will follow one another—fire and flood and earthquake, with war and bloodshed." Vol. 9, Testimonies, p. 97:1.

[1] Though the tempest was still a future event, it was already approaching in 1890.

[2] At any time in this period of the approaching of the storm, the unfortunate experience with the large class could occur.

c. These are among the events to take place while the storm (probation closing) is approaching.

(1) Though the tempest is still a future event, it was already approaching in 1890. Since then we are closer still to the storm. At any time in this period of the approaching of the storm the unfortunate experience with the large class could occur. Commenting on the above Testimony (Messages to Young People, p. 89-90), a prominent Seventh-day Adventist leader writes as follows:

"‘Here are things foretold that at that time seemed altogether incredible—increasing earthquakes, increasing trouble, thousands of ships hurled into the sea, navies going down, millions of human beings sacrificed, destroying fires increasing, and increasing railroad accidents. But we have seen their fulfillment since.

"‘Who could have foreseen thousands of ships hurled into the sea when mines, torpedoes, and submarines were scarcely known, and their use on such a large scale as in the Great War unthought of? But literally ‘thousands of ships’ were ‘hurled into the midst of the sea,’ during the Great War of 1914-18. . . ‘ The Gift of Prophecy by C. Haynes 160." Behold, I Stand at the Door and Knock, by A. C. Sas. pp. 86, 87.

d. Anywhere from 1890 to the close of probation we can expect a majority of Seventh-day Adventist to abandon their position and join the opposition in fulfillment of Great Controversy, p. 608:2.

(1) Why? Because they were uniting with the world and view matters in nearly the same light.

(2) The test is brought and they choose the popular side. "The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments of God and the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated from the dross in the church. True godliness will be clearly distinguished from the appearance and tinsel of it. Many a star that we have admired for its brilliancy will then go out in darkness. Chaff like a cloud will be borne away on the wind, even from places where we see only floors of rich wheat. All who assume the ornaments of the sanctuary, but are not clothed with Christ’s righteousness, will appear in the shame of their own nakedness." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 81:1.

(a) When the test is brought (Sunday decree) they yield. Great Controversy, p. 608:2.

(b) At that time (Sunday decree) they become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren.

(c) Former means once brethren == SEPARATION!!!

(3) But this is after the Sunday Decree when they fail.

(a) But they become "former brethren" BEFORE that time.

(b) Back to Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 81:1.

[1] At this time the Gold is separated from the dross in the church; not the dross from the Gold!

(c) When the storm does come, their work is finished. "In this time of persecution the faith of the Lord’s servants will be tried. They have faithfully given the warning, looking to God and to His word alone. God’s Spirit, moving upon their hearts, has constrained them to speak. Stimulated with holy zeal, and with the divine impulse strong upon them, they entered upon the performance of their duties without coldly calculating the consequences of speaking to the people the word which the Lord had given them. They have not consulted their temporal interests, nor sought to preserve their reputation or their lives. Yet when the storm of opposition and reproach bursts upon them, some, overwhelmed with consternation, will be ready to exclaim: ‘Had we foreseen the consequences of our words, we would have held our peace.’ They are hedged in with difficulties. Satan assails them with fierce temptations. The work which they have undertaken seems far beyond their ability to accomplish. They are threatened with destruction. The enthusiasm which animated them is gone; yet they cannot turn back. Then, feeling their utter helplessness, they flee to the Mighty One for strength. They remember that the words which they have spoken were not theirs, but His who bade them give the warning. God put the truth into their hearts, and they could not forbear to proclaim it." Great Controversy, pp. 608-609.

[1]Their experience is just like that which came upon the early Reformers. "The same trials have been experienced by men of God in ages past. Wycliffe, Huss, Luther, Tyndale, Baxter, Wesley, urged that all doctrines be brought to the test of the Bible and declared that they would renounce everything which it condemned. Against these men persecution raged with relentless fury; yet they ceased not to declare the truth. Different periods in the history of the church have each been marked by the development of some special truth, adapted to the necessities of God’s people at that time. Every new truth has made its way against hatred and opposition; those who were blessed with its light were tempted and tried. The Lord gives a special truth for the people in an emergency. Who dare refuse to publish it? He commands His servants to present the last invitation of mercy to the world. They cannot remain silent, except at the peril of their souls. Christ’s ambassadors have nothing to do with consequences. They must perform their duty and leave results with God." Great Controversy, pp. 609-610.

(d) Who gave the final warning? The "former brethren." "Of Babylon, at the time brought to view in this prophecy, it is declared: ‘Her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.’ Revelation 18:5. She has filled up the measure of her guilt, and destruction is about to fall upon her. But God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation of His judgments these faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not of her sins and ‘receive not of her plagues.’ Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. In connection with his message the call is heard: ‘Come out of her, My people.’ These announcements, uniting with the third angel’s message, constitute the final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth." Great Controversy, p. 604:1.

[1] These former brethren are a movement and they give the final warning as a movement.

3. How does this separation take place?

a. What was the characteristic of the faithful? "I saw some, with strong faith and agonizing cries, pleading with God. Their countenances were pale and marked with deep anxiety, expressive of their internal struggle. Firmness and great earnestness was expressed in their countenances; large drops of perspiration fell from their foreheads. Now and then their faces would light up with the marks of God’s approbation, and again the same solemn, earnest, anxious look would settle upon them.

"Evil angels crowded around, pressing darkness upon them to shut out Jesus from their view, that their eyes might be drawn to the darkness that surrounded them, and thus they be led to distrust God and murmur against Him. Their only safety was in keeping their eyes directed upward. Angels of God had charge over His people, and as the poisonous atmosphere of evil angels was pressed around these anxious ones, the heavenly angels were continually wafting their wings over them to scatter the thick darkness." Early Writings, p. 269:1, 2.

(1) She lost sight of the impure class "As the praying ones continued their earnest cries, at times a ray of light from Jesus came to them, to encourage their hearts and light up their countenances. Some, I saw, did not participate in this work of agonizing and pleading. They seemed indifferent and careless. They were not resisting the darkness around them, and it shut them in like a thick cloud. The angels of God left these and went to the aid of the earnest, praying ones. I saw angels of God hasten to the assistance of all who were struggling with all their power to resist the evil angels and trying to help themselves by calling upon God with perseverance. But His angels left those who made no effort to help themselves, and I lost sight of them." Early Writings, p. 270:1.

b. There was a separation, a shaking. What caused it? "I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart of the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the straight truth. Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise up against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among God’s people." Early Writings, p. 270:2.

(1) Why did the shaking take place? It was caused by the straight testimony called forth in the counsel of the true witness to the Laodiceans. Revelation 3:18.

(2) In these three goods that the true witness offers to the church, which one was offered in 1888? Christ our Righteousness.

(a) Remember that the message of 1888 is the counsel to Laodicea: "The message given us by A. T. Jones, and E. J. Waggoner is the message of God to the Laodicean church, and woe be unto anyone who professes to believe the truth and yet does not reflect to others the God-given rays." The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p. 1052:2.

(b) When it was presented, what was the reaction?

[1] This will have an effect upon the heart of the receiver.

[2] Some will not bear it but will rise up against it and this will cause a shaking among God’s people.

c. What was the result of the praying pleading ones accepting the Message to Laodicea? Early Writings, p. 270:2.

(1) They exalt the standard and pour forth the straight truth.

(2) What is the standard they exalt? "When you have a congregation before you for only two weeks, do not defer the presentation of the Sabbath question until everything else is presented, supposing that you thus pave the way for it. Lift up the standard—the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Make this the important theme. Then, by your strong arguments, make it of still greater force. Dwell more on the Revelation. Read, explain, and enforce its teaching." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 61:1.

d. When the standard is lifted, one class rise up against it and this causes the shaking.

[[(1) Idea of shaking is from Amos 9:9; Matthew 3:12; "‘Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner.’ This was one of the times of purging. By the words of truth, the chaff was being separated from the wheat. Because they were too vain and self-righteous to receive reproof, too world-loving to accept a life of humility, many turned away from Jesus. Many are still doing the same thing. Souls are tested to-day as were those disciples in the synagogue at Capernaum. When truth is brought home to the heart, they see that their lives are not in accordance with the will of God. They see the need of an entire change in themselves; but they are not willing to take up the self-denying work. Therefore they are angry when their sins are discovered. They go away offended, even as the disciples left Jesus, murmuring, ‘This is an hard saying; who can hear it?’" Desire of Ages, p. 392:2.]]

(a) Where did she get this word "shaking" from? "Every selfish, covetous person will fall out by the way. Like Judas, who sold his Lord, they will sell good principles and a noble, generous disposition for a little of earth’s gain. All such will be sifted out from God’s people." Early Writings, p. 269:0.

(b) Shaking or sifting was known by the farmers.

(c) What is the reason for sifting or shaking? To separate the chaff from the grain.

(d) Other words for sifting: choose, filter, pick, remove, screen, select, separate, sieve, sort.

(2) There is no such a thing as a shaking without a separation.

(a) Is the multitude shaken out of the church? "I was pointed to the providence of God among His people and was shown that every trial made by the refining, purifying process upon professed Christians proves some to be dross. The fine gold does not always appear. In every religious crisis some fall under temptation. The shaking of God blows away multitudes like dry leaves. Prosperity multiplies a mass of professors. Adversity purges them out of the church. As a class, their spirits are not steadfast with God. They go out from us because they are not of us; for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, many are offended." Vol. 4, Testimonies for the Church, p. 89:2.

(b) Sometimes heresies are used. "God will arouse His people; if other means fail, heresies will come in among them, which will sift them, separating the chaff from the wheat. The Lord calls upon all who believe His word to awake out of sleep. Precious light has come, appropriate for this time. It is Bible truth, showing the perils that are right upon us. This light should lead us to a diligent study of the Scriptures, and a most critical examination of the positions which we hold."

"God would have all the bearings and positions of truth thoroughly and perseveringly searched, with prayer and fasting. Believers are not to rest in suppositions and ill-defined ideas of what constitutes truth. Their faith must be firmly founded upon the word of God, so that when the testing time shall come, and they are brought before councils to answer for their faith, they may be able to give a reason for the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear." Gospel Workers, p. 299:1, 2.

(c) Blows away multitudes, leaving a few remnant.

(d) Sometimes it shakes out the entire church like in the case of the Jewish church leaving only a small remnant. Romans 9:25-28.

[1] Although the Jewish church remained with the temple, it still was a severed branch. "The Sanhedrin had rejected Christ’s message and was bent upon His death; therefore Jesus departed from Jerusalem, from the priests, the temple, the religious leaders, the people who had been instructed in the law, and turned to another class to proclaim His message, and to gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations." Desire of Ages, pp. 232:1.

"The people of Israel had made their choice. Pointing to Jesus they had said, ‘Not this man, but Barabbas.’ Barabbas, the robber and murderer, was the representative of Satan. Christ was the representative of God. Christ had been rejected; Barabbas had been chosen. Barabbas they were to have. In making this choice they accepted him who from the beginning was a liar and a murderer. Satan was their leader. As a nation they would act out his dictation. His works they would do. His rule they must endure. That people who chose Barabbas in the place of Christ were to feel the cruelty of Barabbas as long as time should last." Desire of Ages, p. 739:2.

[2] One group is forced to turn away from the churches they loved.

[3] The other group was obliged to leave.

(e) Jesus began the first steps in organization. (Luke 6:12, 13; "The first step was now to be taken in the organization of the church that after Christ’s departure was to be His representative on earth. No costly sanctuary was at their command, but the Saviour led His disciples to the retreat He loved, and in their minds the sacred experiences of that day were forever linked with the beauty of mountain and vale and sea." Desire of Ages, p. 291:2.)

[1] This was while the Jewish church still had a period of grace left.

[2] In the true reformation, that will still be the same. 343:1.

(f) Why was Jesus forced to reorganize this church? John 8:32-41.

Without a spiritual connection with him, which would be manifested in possessing the same spirit, and doing the same works, they were not his children."

This is what constitutes men the successors of the first teachers of the gospel." Desire of Ages, pp. 466:6-467:1.

(g) Did they realize that the whole organizational system was worthless in the Sight of God? "When God’s presence was finally withdrawn from the Jewish nation, priests and people knew it not. Though under the control of Satan, and swayed by the most horrible and malignant passions, they still regarded themselves as the chosen of God. The ministration in the temple continued; sacrifices were offered upon its polluted altars, and daily the divine blessing was invoked upon a people guilty of the blood of God’s dear Son and seeking to slay His ministers and apostles." Great Controversy, p. 615:1.

e. Catholics accused the Protestants of separating. "Romanists have persisted in bringing against Protestants the charge of heresy and willful separation from the true church. But these accusations apply rather to themselves. They are the ones who laid down the banner of Christ and departed from ‘the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.’ Jude 3." Great Controversy, p. 51:2.

(1) Waldenses brought to view in the next chapter so they were the remnant already back then.

(2) What identifies the true church? Truth. "If we comply with the conditions the Lord has made, we shall secure our election to salvation. Perfect obedience to His commandments is the evidence that we love God, and are not hardened in sin."

"Christ has a church in every age. There are in the church those who are not made any better by their connection with it. They themselves break the terms of their election. Obedience to the commandments of God gives us a right to the privileges of His church (Manuscript 166, 1898)." Vol. 6, Bible Commentary, p 1079:2, 3.

(3) What gives us the right to be His church?

(a) Those who heeded the counsel of the true witness and upheld the commandments of God.

(b) Those that opposed this have no right to claim to be His true church.

e. This little company was mightily shaken. "Said the angel, ‘List ye!’ Soon I heard a voice like many musical instruments all sounding in perfect strains, sweet and harmonious. It surpassed any music I had ever heard, seeming to be full of mercy, compassion, and elevating, holy joy. It thrilled through my whole being. Said the angel, ‘Look ye!’ My attention was then turned to the company I had seen, who were mightily shaken. I was shown those whom I had before seen weeping and praying in agony of spirit. The company of guardian angels around them had been doubled, and they were clothed with an armor from their head to their feet. They moved in exact order, like a company of soldiers. Their countenances expressed the severe conflict which they had endured, the agonizing struggle they had passed through. Yet their features, marked with severe internal anguish, now shone with the light and glory of heaven. They had obtained the victory, and it called forth from them the deepest gratitude and holy, sacred joy." Early Writings, pp. 270-271.

(1) She saw the ones pleading but the others were lost sight of.

(2) Before these pleading ones are clothed with armor, they are mightily shaken.

(3) This shaking continues in this company - it does not stop because among them others need to be shaken.

(a) Thus their numbers were lessened. "The numbers of this company had lessened. Some had been shaken out and left by the way. The careless and indifferent, who did not join with those who prized victory and salvation enough to perseveringly plead and agonize for it, did not obtain it, and they were left behind in darkness, and their places were immediately filled by others taking hold of the truth and coming into the ranks. Evil angels still pressed around them, but could have no power over them." Early Writings, p. 271:1..

(b) In this company were no open sins but there was carelessness and indifference.

(c) The shaking continues till they were cleansed from all the careless and indifferent.

[1] Again, this is not from the original company since she lost sight of them.

f. Parallel statement. "The time has come for a thorough reformation to take place. When this reformation begins, the spirit of prayer will actuate every believer and will banish from the church the spirit of discord and strife. Those who have not been living in Christian fellowship will draw close to one another. One member working in right lines will lead other members to unite with him in making intercession for the revelation of the Holy Spirit. There will be no confusion, because all will be in harmony with the mind of the Spirit. The barriers separating believer from believer will be broken down, and God’s servants will speak the same things. The Lord will co-operate with His servants. All will pray understandingly the prayer that Christ taught His servants: ‘Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.’ Matthew 6:10." Vol. 8, Testimonies to the Church, p. 251:1.

(1) When this reformation begins, it will banished from the church discord and strife.

(2) This means there was in the reformation group these things in beginning and it remains till this company is purified.

(a) This takes place in the church that undertakes a reformation.

(3) How long does the shaking continue?

(a) Till all the careless discordant etc., are banished; all are now wheat and no more chaff.

(b) When it is pure and clean then there is no need for further shaking.

(c) All will now be in harmony and God’s servants will speak the same thing.

g. Then they go out. Evil angels still pressed around them, but could have no power over them.

"I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth with great power. It had effect. Many had been bound; some wives by their husbands, and some children by their parents. The honest who had been prevented from hearing the truth now eagerly laid hold upon it. All fear of their relatives was gone, and the truth alone was exalted to them. They had been hungering and thirsting for truth; it was dearer and more precious than life. I asked what had made this great change. An angel answered, ‘It is the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord, the loud cry of the third angel.’" Early Writings, p. 271:1,2.

(1) What gave them this power?

(2) When did they receive this power? "Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 214:2.

(a) Then they were purified.

h. Separation and unity. Not having received the love of the truth, they will be taken in the delusions of the enemy; they will give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and will depart from the faith. But, on the other hand, when the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, the true sheep will hear the true Shepherd’s voice. Self-denying efforts will be put forth to save the lost, and many who have strayed from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd. The people of God will draw together and present to the enemy a united front. In view of the common peril, strife for supremacy will cease; there will be no disputing as to who shall be accounted greatest. No one of the true believers will say: ‘I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas.’ The testimony of one and all will be: ‘I cleave unto Christ; I rejoice in Him as my personal Saviour.’" Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 400 -401.

(1) What about unity? "Thus will the truth be brought into practical life, and thus will be answered the prayer of Christ, uttered just before His humiliation and death: ‘That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.’ John 17:21. The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the third angel swell to a loud cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the glory of the Lord." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 401: 0, 1.

(2) When storm of persecution breaks upon them the true sheep will listen.

(3) There will be self-denying efforts to save the lost.

(4) Those who strayed from the fold will come back.

(5) The strife for supremacy will cease.

(6) Then the message of the third angel swells to a loud cry.

*** Summary thus far. [This study can be finished using the Addendum]

1. First Separation in the Seventh-day Adventist church.

2. The little company is separated from the Seventh-day Adventist church and is completely pure = all wheat.

3. Then the Latter Rain comes.

4. Then the Sunday Law is enacted.

5. Then there is another separation in the Seventh-day Adventist church and the remainder of the faithful leave.

6. Then the little time of trouble. "I saw that God had children who do not see and keep the Sabbath. They have not rejected the light upon it. And at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the Holy Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully. This enraged the churches and nominal Adventists, as they could not refute the Sabbath truth. And at this time God’s chosen all saw clearly that we had the truth, and they came out and endured the persecution with us. I saw the sword, famine, pestilence, and great confusion in the land. The wicked thought that we had brought the judgments upon them, and they rose up and took counsel to rid the earth of us, thinking that then the evil would be stayed." Early Writings, pp. 33-34.

a. This time of trouble is not Jacob’s trouble. "This view was given in 1847 when there were but very few of the Advent brethren observing the Sabbath, and of these but few supposed that its observance was of sufficient importance to draw a line between the people of God and unbelievers. Now the fulfilment of that view is beginning to be seen. ‘The commencement of that time of trouble,’ here mentioned does not refer to the time when the plagues shall begin to be poured out, but to a short period just before they are poured out, while Christ is in the sanctuary. At that time, while the work of salvation is closing, trouble will be coming on the earth, and the nations will be angry, yet held in check so as not to prevent the work of the third angel. At that time the ‘latter rain,’ or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last plagues shall be poured out." Early Writings, pp. 85-86.

7. Greatest power = time of Latter Rain. "Thus the message of the third angel will be proclaimed. As the time comes for it to be given with greatest power, the Lord will work through humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to His service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit than by the training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will be constrained to go forth with holy zeal, declaring the words which God gives them. The sins of Babylon will be laid open. The fearful results of enforcing the observances of the church by civil authority, the inroads of spiritualism, the stealthy but rapid progress of the papal power—all will be unmasked. By these solemn warnings the people will be stirred. Thousands upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these. In amazement they hear the testimony that Babylon is the church, fallen because of her errors and sins, because of her rejection of the truth sent to her from heaven. As the people go to their former teachers with the eager inquiry, Are these things so? the ministers present fables, prophesy smooth things, to soothe their fears and quiet the awakened conscience. But since many refuse to be satisfied with the mere authority of men and demand a plain ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ the popular ministry, like the Pharisees of old, filled with anger as their authority is questioned, will denounce the message as of Satan and stir up the sin-loving multitudes to revile and persecute those who proclaim it." Great Controversy, pp. 606-607.

a. The Latter Rain comes before the Sunday Decree. The Latter Rain provokes the Sunday decree. "As the controversy extends into new fields and the minds of the people are called to God’s downtrodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions. The church appeals to the strong arm of civil power, and, in this work, papists and Protestants unite. As the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold and decided, the law will be invoked against commandment keepers. They will be threatened with fines and imprisonment, and some will be offered positions of influence, and other rewards and advantages, as inducements to renounce their faith. But their steadfast answer is: ‘Show us from the word of God our error’—the same plea that was made by Luther under similar circumstances. Those who are arraigned before the courts make a strong vindication of the truth, and some who hear them are led to take their stand to keep all the commandments of God. Thus light will be brought before thousands who otherwise would know nothing of these truths." Great Controversy, p. 607:1

b. Then the church appeals to the civil power.

(First the Sunday law in America, then a universal decree in every country. "Brethren and sisters, would that I might say something to awaken you to the importance of this time, the significance of the events that are now taking place. I point you to the aggressive movements now being made for the restriction of religious liberty. God’s sanctified memorial has been torn down, and in its place a false sabbath, bearing no sanctity, stands before the world. And while the powers of darkness are stirring up the elements from beneath, the Lord God of heaven is sending power from above to meet the emergency by arousing His living agencies to exalt the law of heaven. Now, just now, is our time to work in foreign countries. As America, the land of religious liberty, shall unite with the papacy in forcing the conscience and compelling men to honor the false sabbath, the people of every country on the globe will be led to follow her example. Our people are not half awake to do all in their power, with the facilities within their reach, to extend the message of warning." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 18:2).

c. This is the final test. It comes to every soul. 81:1

(1) In this time the gold is separated FROM the dross in the church.

(2) This is not the remnant church because the remnant church is now purified and this is after the Latter Rain. This is the large class and the dross will not go out, the gold will come out.

(a) This is the second separation in the Seventh-day Adventist church.

(b) In that church the dross remains. "Here we see that the church—the Lord’s sanctuary—was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 211:2.

c. Where will the gold go? "I saw that God has honest children among the nominal Adventists and the fallen churches, and before the plagues shall be poured out, ministers and people will be called out from these churches and will gladly receive the truth. Satan knows this; and before the loud cry of the third angel is given, he raises an excitement in these religious bodies, that those who have rejected the truth may think that God is with them. He hopes to deceive the honest and lead them to think that God is still working for the churches. But the light will shine, and all who are honest will leave the fallen churches, and take their stand with the remnant." Early Writings, p. 261:1.

(1) The honest leave the fallen churches and go to the remnant.

(2) This remnant is the Remnant church. "Zechariah’s vision of Joshua and the Angel applies with peculiar force to the experience of God’s people in the closing up of the great day of atonement. The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress. Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he has gained control of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete. As he influenced the heathen nations to destroy Israel, so in the near future he will stir up the wicked powers of earth to destroy the people of God. All will be required to render obedience to human edicts in violation of the divine law. Those who will be true to God and to duty will be menaced, denounced, and proscribed. They will ‘be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends.’" Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 472-473.

"The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have entire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this will not be while the largest portion of the church are not laborers together with God. —Review and Herald, July 21, 1896." Christian Service, 253:2.

d. The largest portion are missionaries but all are perfect? "I was shown that the manner of Achan’s confession was similar to the confessions that some among us have made and will make. They hide their wrongs and refuse to make a voluntary confession until God searches them out, and then they acknowledge their sins. A few persons pass on in a course of wrong until they become hardened. They may even know that the church is burdened, as Achan knew that Israel were made weak before their enemies because of his guilt. Yet their consciences do not condemn them. They will not relieve the church by humbling their proud, rebellious hearts before God and putting away their wrongs. God’s displeasure is upon His people, and He will not manifest His power in the midst of them while sins exist among them and are fostered by those in responsible positions." Vol. 3, Testimonies for the Church, p. 270:2;

(1) "I have been shown that God here illustrates how He regards sin among those who profess to be His commandment-keeping people. Those whom He has specially honored with witnessing the remarkable exhibitions of His power, as did ancient Israel, and who will even then venture to disregard His express directions, will be subjects of His wrath. He would teach His people that disobedience and sin are exceedingly offensive to Him and are not to be lightly regarded. He shows us that when His people are found in sin they should at once take decided measures to put that sin from them, that His frown may not rest upon them all. But if the sins of the people are passed over by those in responsible positions, His frown will be upon them, and the people of God, as a body, will be held responsible for those sins. In His dealings with His people in the past the Lord shows the necessity of purifying the church from wrongs. One sinner may diffuse darkness that will exclude the light of God from the entire congregation. When the people realize that darkness is settling upon them, and they do not know the cause, they should seek God earnestly, in great humility and self-abasement, until the wrongs which grieve His Spirit are searched out and put away." Vol. 3, Testimonies for the Church, p. 265:1.

(2) "If our people continue in the listless attitude in which they have been, God cannot pour upon them His Spirit. They are unprepared to co-operate with Him. They are not awake to the situation and do not realize the threatened danger. They should feel now, as never before, their need of vigilance and concerted action." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 714:1.

(3) "The success of the meeting depends on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. For the outpouring of the Spirit every lover of the cause of truth should pray. And as far as lies in our power, we are to remove every hindrance to His working. The Spirit can never be poured out while variance and bitterness toward one another are cherished by the members of the church. Envy, jealousy, evil-surmising, and evil-speaking are of Satan, and they effectually bar the way against the Holy Spirit’s working." Vol. 6, Testimonies to the Church, p. 42:1.

(4) "To us today, as verily as to the first disciples, the promise of the Spirit belongs. God will today endow men and women with power from above, as He endowed those who on the Day of Pentecost heard the word of salvation. At this very hour His Spirit and His grace are for all who need them and will take Him at His word.

"Notice that it was after the disciples had come into perfect unity, when they were no longer striving for the highest place, that the Spirit was poured out. They were of one accord. All differences had been put away. And the testimony borne of them after the Spirit had been given is the same. Mark the word: ‘The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul.’ Acts 4:32. The Spirit of Him who died that sinners might live animated the entire congregation of believers.

"The disciples did not ask for a blessing for themselves. They were weighted with the burden of souls. The gospel was to be carried to the ends of the earth, and they claimed the endowment of power that Christ had promised. Then it was that the Holy Spirit was poured out, and thousands were converted in a day.

"So it may be now." Vol. 8, Testimonies for the Church, p. 20, 21.

(5) God will have a pure church. "‘God is sifting His people. He will have a clean and holy church. We cannot read the heart of man. But the Lord has provided means to keep the church pure. A corrupt people has arisen who could not live with the people of God. They despised reproof, and would not be corrected. They had an opportunity to know that theirs was an unrighteous warfare. They had time to repent of their wrongs; but self was too dear to die. They nourished it, and it grew strong, and they separated from the trusting people of God, whom He is purifying unto Himself. We all have reason to thank God that a way has been opened to save the church; for the wrath of God must have come upon us if these corrupt pretenders had remained with us." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 99:3.

(a) "If all that appears to be divine life were such in reality; if all who profess to present the truth to the world were preaching for the truth and not against it, and if they were men of God guided by His Spirit, —then might we see something cheering amid the prevailing moral darkness. But the spirit of antichrist is prevailing to such an extent as never before. Well may we exclaim: ‘Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.’ I know that many think far too favorably of the present time. These ease-loving souls will be engulfed in the general ruin. Yet we do not despair. We have been inclined to think that where there are no faithful ministers there can be no true Christians, but this is not the case. God has promised that where the shepherds are not true He will take charge of the flock Himself. God has never made the flock wholly dependent upon human instrumentalities. But the days of purification of the church are hastening on apace. God will have a people pure and true. In the mighty sifting soon to take place we shall be better able to measure the strength of Israel. The signs reveal that the time is near when the Lord will manifest that His fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 79-80;

(b) "God’s love for His church is infinite. His care over His heritage is unceasing. He suffers no affliction to come upon the church but such as is essential for her purification, her present and eternal good. He will purify His church even as He purified the temple at the beginning and close of His ministry on earth. All that He brings upon the church in test and trial comes that His people may gain deeper piety and more strength to carry the triumphs of the cross to all parts of the world. He has a work for all to do. There must be constant enlargement and progress. The work must extend from city to city, from country to country, and from nation to nation, moving continually onward and upward, established, strengthened, and settled." Vol. 9, Testimonies for the Church, p. 228:2.

8. In the Seventh-day Adventist church faithful ministers will be removed. "Many will stand in our pul-pits with the torch of false prophecy in their hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan. If doubts and unbelief are cherished, the faithful ministers will be removed from the people who think they know so much. ‘If thou hadst known,’ said Christ, ‘even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.’" Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 409-410.

a. Who then remains?

b. But this is not a separation after which a work of reformation takes place.

"It is in a crisis that character is revealed. When the earnest voice proclaimed at midnight, ‘Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him,’ and the sleeping virgins were roused from their slumbers, it was seen who had made preparation for the event. Both parties were taken unawares; but one was prepared for the emergency, and the other was found without preparation. So now, a sudden and unlooked-for calamity, something that brings the soul face to face with death, will show whether there is any real faith in the promises of God. It will show whether the soul is sustained by grace. The great final test comes at the close of human probation, when it will be too late for the soul’s need to be supplied." Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 412:1.

(1) When the great final test comes it will be to late for the soul need to be supplied.

c. This is the Sunday decree. "The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. While the observance of the false sabbath in compliance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, will be an avowal of allegiance to a power that is in opposition to God, the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedience to God’s law, is an evidence of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority, receive the seal of God." Great Controversy, p. 605:2.

d. After the final test, then comes the close of probation.

e. In this time there is not time for preparation. Just time to leave families, churches, etc.

f. In the second separation there is no more time left for a reformation.

g. But in the first separation there is time for a reformation.

(1) "I was shown that the testimony to the Laodiceans applies to God’s people at the present time, and the reason it has not accomplished a greater work is because of the hardness of their hearts. But God has given the message time to do its work. The heart must be purified from sins which have so long shut out Jesus. This fearful message will do its work. When it was first presented, it led to close examination of heart. Sins were confessed, and the people of God were stirred everywhere. Nearly all believed that this message would end in the loud cry of the third angel. But as they failed to see the powerful work accomplished in a short time, many lost the effect of the message. I saw that this message would not accomplish its work in a few short months. It is designed to arouse the people of God, to discover to them their backslidings, and to lead to zealous repentance, that they may be favored with the presence of Jesus, and be fitted for the loud cry of the third angel. As this message affected the heart, it led to deep humility before God. Angels were sent in every direction to prepare unbelieving hearts for the truth. The cause of God began to rise, and His people were acquainted with their position. If the counsel of the True Witness had been fully heeded, God would have wrought for His people in greater power. Yet the efforts made since the message has been given, have been blessed of God, and many souls have been brought from error and darkness to rejoice in the truth." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 186:1.

(a) The shaking is caused by the Message to the Laodiceans.

(2) There is time for work.

(a) "God will prove His people. Jesus bears patiently with them, and does not spew them out of His mouth in a moment. Said the angel: ‘God is weighing His people.’ If the message had been of as short duration as many of us supposed, there would have been no time for them to develop character. Many moved from feeling, not from principle and faith, and this solemn, fearful message stirred them. It wrought upon their feelings, and excited their fears, but did not accomplish the work which God designed that it should. God reads the heart. Lest His people should be deceived in regard to themselves, He gives them time for the excitement to wear off, and then proves them to see if they will obey the counsel of the True Witness." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 186-187.

9. There is time to develop character in the first separation.

a. They are then fitted for the loud cry.

b. In the second separation, there is no time for the development of character.

c. The Mark of the Beast comes as a consequence of proclaiming the third angel’s message. "In God's word we are shown the consequences of proclaiming the third angel’s message. ‘The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.’ Revelation 12:17. A refusal to obey the commandments of God, and a determination to cherish hatred against those who proclaim these commandments, leads to the most determined war on the part of the dragon, whose whole energies are brought to bear against the commandment-keeping people of God. ‘He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.’ Revelation 13:16, 17." Vol 8, Testimonies for the Church, 117:2.

III. Who are the ones that cause the separation?

"Romanists have persisted in bringing against Protestants the charge of heresy and willful separation from the true church. But these accusations apply rather to themselves. They are the ones who laid down the banner of Christ and departed from ‘the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.’ Jude 3." Great Controversy, p. 51:2

1. Why can’t the Sunday decree cannot come before the Latter Rain.

a. "But not one is made to suffer the wrath of God until the truth has been brought home to his mind and conscience, and has been rejected. There are many who have never had an opportunity to hear the special truths for this time. The obligation of the fourth commandment has never been set before them in its true light. He who reads every heart and tries every motive will leave none who desire a knowledge of the truth, to be deceived as to the issues of the controversy. The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently." Great Controversy, p. 605:1.

(1) Every one must have sufficient light to make the decision intelligently; that is why the Sunday decree can not come before the Latter Rain.

c. "Never did this message apply with greater force than it applies today. More and more the world is setting at nought the claims of God. Men have become bold in transgression. The wickedness of the inhabitants of the world has almost filled up the measure of their iniquity. This earth has almost reached the place where God will permit the destroyer to work his will upon it. The substitution of the laws of men for the law of God, the exaltation, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath, is the last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God will reveal Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth. He will come out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their iniquity, and the earth shall disclose her blood and shall no more cover her slain." Vol. 7, Testimonies for the Church, p. 141:1.

(1) Sunday decree = last act of the drama. When this is universal then comes the close of probation.

(2) "When God was about to smite the first-born of Egypt, He commanded the Israelites to gather their children from among the Egyptians into their own dwellings and strike their door posts with blood, that the destroying angel might see it and pass over their homes. It was the work of parents to gather in their children. This is your work, this is my work, and the work of every mother who believes the truth. The angel is to place a mark upon the forehead of all who are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel will follow, to slay utterly both old and young." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 505:2.

(a) All must be separated from sin and sinners.

(3) "The Lord has shown me clearly that the image of the beast will be formed before probation closes; for it is to be the great test for the people of God, by which their eternal destiny will be decided. . . . [Revelation 13:11-17 quoted.] . . .

"This is the test that the people of God must have before they are sealed. All who proved their loyalty to God by observing His law, and refusing to accept a spurious sabbath, will rank under the banner of the Lord God Jehovah, and will receive the seal of the living God. Those who yield the truth of heavenly origin and accept the Sunday sabbath, will receive the mark of the beast (Letter 11, 1890)." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 976:2, 3.

(a) This God’s people are not God’s church but God’s people in fallen churches.

2. Before they are sealed they must be tested. They cannot be tested till they understand it clearly. But this is not the test on God’s remnant church. This is the final test.

a. But when is God’s church tested? Early Writings, p. 42:2.

b. When did the test begin upon God’s church? Since 1844.

(1) When will the testing be finished? Before Latter Rain is poured out.

(2) "If the light of truth has been presented to you, revealing the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and showing that there is no foundation in the Word of God for Sunday observance, and yet you still cling to the false sabbath, refusing to keep holy the Sabbath which God calls ‘My holy day,’ you receive the mark of the beast. When does this take place? When you obey the decree that commands you to cease from labor on Sunday and worship God, while you know that there is not a word in the Bible showing Sunday to be other than a common working day, you consent to receive the mark of the beast, and refuse the seal of God.—Review and Herald, July 13, 1897." Evangelism, p. 235:2.

(a) This decree cannot be the death decree since the execution takes place at beginning of 7th plague.

a. Then the church appeals to civil power.

b. (First the Sunday law in America; then the universal decree in every country. Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 18:2).

c. Then comes the little time of trouble. 33-34.

(1) This time of trouble is not Jacob’s trouble. 85-86.

(2) Why the Sunday decree cannot come before Latter Rain.

(a) Everyone must have sufficient light to make the decision intelligently that is why Sunday decree can not come before the Latter Rain. "But not one is made to suffer the wrath of God until the truth has been brought home to his mind and conscience, and has been rejected. . . The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently." Great Controversy, p. 605:1.

(b) When the Sabbath is proclaimed more fully. Early Writings, p. 33-34.

(c) Sunday decree = last act of the drama. When this is universal then comes the close of probation. Vol. 7, Testimonies for the Church, p. 141:1.

d. Results in the final test. It comes to every soul. Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 81:1

(1) In this time the gold is separated FROM the dross in the church.

(a) At this time in the Seventh-day Adventist church faithful ministers are being removed. "Many will stand in our pulpits with the torch of false prophecy in their hands, kindled from the hellish torch of Satan. 409-410.

(b) Who then remains when these faithful ministers are removed?

ADDENDUM

I. Remnant.

(1) Message to Laodicea first presented then a Shaking, Sifting, and Separation.

(2) What caused the separation in the Seventh-day Adventist church?

(a) This first separation is not caused by the Sunday Law but by the counsel to the Laodiceans. 270:3.

(b) The Large class (95% - in 1890’s) did not accept the counsel.

(c) This smaller class were not already pure at the onset. Therefore, the class that did accept this counsel will yet be purified even more.

[1] The class that accepts are identified as undertaking a work of reformation. "No repentance is genuine that does not work reformation. The righteousness of Christ is not a cloak to cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin; it is a principle of life that transforms the character and controls the conduct. Holiness is wholeness for God; it is the entire surrender of heart and life to the indwelling of the principles of heaven." Desire of Ages, pp. 555-556.

[2] Obeying the truth purifies them. Remember 1 Peter 1:22.

(3) This group that was accepting the reformation process was not purified at once. The shaking continued as they were mightily shaken: "My attention was then turned to the company I had seen, who were mightily shaken. 271:0

1. This remnant identified as pleading in agony of spirit.

a. What is the purpose of the shaking? To throw out the base metal.

(1) That is why the mighty shaking is to continue. It doesn’t stop with the first shaking (separation).

(2) Notice that the shakings are continual in the upward way vision. (Vol. 2, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 594:1-597:2.)

2. First attention is drawn to the ultimate condition of this company.

a. What is the result? It is clothed in armor completely.

(1) Now shone with the light and the glory of heaven. Early Writings, p. 271:0.

(2) This is after the shaking is finished.

3. But what till then? The shaking did not stop.

a. Now she places her focus again on the shaking. Early Writings, p. 271:1.

(1) After the separation, some are left behind. Who are they?

(a) They are the careless and indifferent.

b. Parallel prophecy. "God has not changed toward His faithful servants who are keeping their garments spotless. But many are crying, ‘Peace and safety,’ while sudden destruction is coming upon them. Unless there is thorough repentance, unless men humble their hearts by confession and receive the truth as it is in Jesus, they will never enter heaven. When purification shall take place in our ranks, we shall no longer rest at ease, boasting of being rich and increased with goods, in need of nothing."

"Who can truthfully say: ‘Our gold is tried in the fire; our garments are unspotted by the world’? I saw our Instructor pointing to the garments of so-called righteousness. Stripping them off, He laid bare the defilement beneath. Then He said to me: ‘Can you not see how they have pretentiously covered up their defilement and rottenness of character? ‘How is the faithful city become an harlot!’ My Father’s house is made a house of merchandise, a place whence the divine presence and glory have departed! For this cause there is weakness, and strength is lacking.’"

"Unless the church, which is now being leavened with her own backsliding, shall repent and be converted, she will eat of the fruit of her own doing, until she shall abhor herself. When she resists the evil and chooses the good, when she seeks God with all humility and reaches her high calling in Christ, standing on the platform of eternal truth and by faith laying hold upon the attainments prepared for her, she will be healed. She will appear in her God-given simplicity and purity, separate from earthly entanglements, showing that the truth has made her free indeed. Then her members will indeed be the chosen of God, His representatives.

8, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 250:1-251:1

(1) It was already time to start thorough reformation back then.

(2) When this reformation begins, the spirit of prayer will actuate every believer and banish the spirit of discord and strife among God’s people.

(3) From which church will this be banished? From the Large class whom she lost sight of or of the remnant who undertake this reformation?

(a) How do we know the large class did not repent? Desire of Ages, pp. 555-556.

"Upon those who have taken upon them the work of shepherds of the flock, will be visited the heaviest judgments, because they have presented to the people fables instead of truth. Children will rise up and curse their parents. Church members, who have seen the light and been convicted, but who have trusted the salvation of their souls to the minister, will learn in the day of God that no other soul can pay the ransom for their transgression. A terrible cry will be raised, ‘I am lost, eternally lost.’ Men will feel as though they could rend in pieces the ministers who have preached falsehoods and condemned the truth. The pure truth for this time requires a reformation in the life, but they separate themselves from the love of the truth, and of them it can be said, ‘O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself.’ The Lord sends a message to the people, ‘Set a trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant and trespassed against my law (Letter 30, 1900)." Vol. 4, SDA Bible Commentary, p. 1157:2.

[1] Repentance == Reformation.

(b) No evidence of repentance is mentioned in Vol. 8, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 250-251.

[1] Unless there is a thorough reformation.

(4) When does this reformation begin?

(a) Reformation begins in that church which undertakes a reformation.

(b) So the church which is in the process of reformation, from that reformation church the spirit of discord and strife will be discarded.

(c) For what purpose? So that that church can be purified.

[1] That means that when the process begins, there is still the spirit of discord and strife in her midst.

4. The main sifting began in 1888 in the church and then the shaking continues in the church which undertakes the reformation.

a. The result of shaking is separation. After the separation shaking continues in the remnant church not in the one lost sight of.

5. Reformation, revival, purification, preparation continues.

a. How long will the shaking, sifting, or fanning continue?

(1) Until the church will be pure. When a farmer shakes the grain, he stops only when all the chaff is separated; and there is no more need of shaking.

b. Will the church of God be a clean church?

(1) Unfortunately today, the reformation church is not yet the pure, clean church; but prophecy tells that the church of God will be clean and pure. Ephesians 5:26, 27.

(a) This church which undertakes a reformation will end up as a pure church. "‘God is sifting His people. He will have a clean and holy church. We cannot read the heart of man. But the Lord has provided means to keep the church pure." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 99:3.

(b) Whether you or I are there will not determine whether the church will be pure at one time. With us or without us, it will achieve this condition.

(2) The church will be thoroughly purified. All the careless and indifferent, that have the spirit of discord or strife will be banished from God’s true church. "I know that many think far too favorably of the present time. These ease-loving souls will be engulfed in the general ruin. Yet we do not despair. We have been inclined to think that where there are no faithful ministers there can be no true Christians, but this is not the case. God has promised that where the shepherds are not true He will take charge of the flock Himself. God has never made the flock wholly dependent upon human instrumentalities. But the days of purification of the church are hastening on apace. God will have a people pure and true. In the mighty sifting soon to take place we shall be better able to measure the strength of Israel. The signs reveal that the time is near when the Lord will manifest that His fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 80:0.

"God’s love for His church is infinite. 228:2.

6. When the church is finally pure, what is the next thing that will happen? "Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 214:2—Sealing and the Latter Rain.

a. When every member of the church reaches this condition, then the church will be pure and the Latter rain will come.

(1) Can God pour out His Spirit on a mixed church? "There are many who do not have the discretion of Joshua and who have no special duty to search out wrongs and to deal promptly with the sins existing among them. Let not such hinder those who have the burden of this work upon them; let them not stand in the way of those who have this duty to do. Some make it a point to question and doubt and find fault because others do the work that God has not laid upon them. These stand directly in the way to hinder those upon whom God has laid the burden of reproving and correcting prevailing sins in order that His frown may be turned away from His people. Should a case like Achan’s be among us, there are many who would accuse those who might act the part of Joshua in searching out the wrong, of having a wicked, fault-finding spirit. God is not to be trifled with and His warnings disregarded with impunity by a perverse people."

"I was shown that the manner of Achan’s confession was similar to the confessions that some among us have made and will make. They hide their wrongs and refuse to make a voluntary confession until God searches them out, and then they acknowledge their sins. A few persons pass on in a course of wrong until they become hardened. They may even know that the church is burdened, as Achan knew that Israel were made weak before their enemies because of his guilt. Yet their consciences do not condemn them. They will not relieve the church by humbling their proud, rebellious hearts before God and putting away their wrongs. God’s displeasure is upon His people, and He will not manifest His power in the midst of them while sins exist among them and are fostered by those in responsible positions." Vol. 3, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 270:1, 2.

"I have been shown that God here illustrates how He regards sin among those who profess to be His commandment-keeping people. 265:1.

"If our people continue in the listless attitude in which they have been, God cannot pour upon them His Spirit. They are unprepared to co-operate with Him. They are not awake to the situation and do not realize the threatened danger. They should feel now, as never before, their need of vigilance and concerted action." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 714:1.

"The success of the meeting depends on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. For the outpouring of the Spirit every lover of the cause of truth should pray. And as far as lies in our power, we are to remove every hindrance to His working. The Spirit can never be poured out while variance and bitterness toward one another are cherished by the members of the church. Envy, jealousy, evil surmising, and evil-speaking are of Satan, and they effectually bar the way against the Holy Spirit’s working. Nothing else in this world is so dear to God as His church. Nothing is guarded by Him with such jealous care. Nothing so offends God as an act that injures the influence of those who are doing His service. He will call to account all who aid Satan in his work of criticizing and discouraging." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 42:1.

(2) Under what conditions was the Holy Spirit poured out on Pentecost? "To us today, as verily as to the first disciples, the promise of the Spirit belongs.

The Spirit of Him who died that sinners might live animated the entire congregation of believers. . . .

"So it may be now." Vol. 8, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 20:3-21:2.

"The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church is looked forward to as in the future; but it is the privilege of the church to have it now. Seek for it, pray for it, believe for it. We must have it, and Heaven is waiting to bestow it. —Review and Herald, March 19, 1895.

"Let Christians . . . ask in faith for the promised blessing, and it will come. The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the former rain, and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant. —Signs of the Times, Feb. 17, 1914.

"The third angel’s message is swelling into a loud cry, and you must not feel at liberty to neglect the present duty, and still entertain the idea that at some future time you will be the recipients of great blessing, when without any effort on your part a wonderful revival will take place . . . Today you are to have your vessel purified, that it may be ready for the heavenly dew, ready for the showers of the latter rain; for the latter rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement. It is our work today to yield our souls to Christ, that we may be fitted for the time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord—fitted for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. . . ." Evangelism, pp. 701:2-702:0.

7. The Holy Spirit cannot be poured out till the remnant church as a whole reaches this condition. "The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we have entire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this will not be while the largest portion of the church are not laborers together with God.—Review and Herald, July 21, 1896." Christian Service, p. 253:2.

a. They must even be tried to see if they can live without dishonoring God first. "Before giving us the baptism of the Holy Spirit, our heavenly Father will try us, to see if we can live without dishonoring Him. —Letter 22, 1902." Vol. 3, Selected Messages, pp. 426-427.

b. There must first be a major separation in the Seventh-day Adventist church. Then the reformation church must also be mightily shaken.

c. When the Holy Spirit is poured out, the cases in God’s church are already decided. Acts 3:19.

(1) The times of refreshing here is the latter rain. "The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked its opening. The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close. Here are ‘the times of refreshing’ to which the apostle Peter looked forward when he said: ‘Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus.’ Acts 3:19, 20." Great Controversy, pp. 611-612.

(a) The 1888 edition mentions the Investigative Judgment after blotting out of sins.

(2) When the sins are blotted out, the person’s case is decided.

(a) Therefore, the seal is impressed in their foreheads.

(b) Although sealing is not finished until the close of probation, for God’s church it closes just before the Latter Rain.

[1] What about backsliders? "But, on the other hand, when the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, the true sheep will hear the true Shepherd’s voice. 6, Testimonies, p. 401:0.

[2] This is before the Latter Rain. ‘Thus will the truth be brought into practical life, and thus will be answered the prayer of Christ, uttered just before His humiliation and death: ‘That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.’ John 17:21. The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the third angel swell to a loud cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the glory of the Lord." Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 401:1.

(c) Then they receive the refreshing of the Spirit in Its fullness.

[1] For those who did not make the preparation, the door closed before the Latter Rain experience (upon the remnant reformation church as a whole). "Oh, that the people might know the time of their visitation! There are many who have not yet heard the testing truth for this time. There are many with whom the Spirit of God is striving. The time of God’s destructive judgments is the time of mercy for those who have had no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter." Vol. 9, Testimonies for the Church, p. 97:2.

[2] The door of probation closed for those who did not undertake the work of reformation, and for all who were shaken out of the church. However, the door still is open for those who have not yet heard God’s testing truth; and for some of those in the large class. 33-34.

[3] Most probably for those who were part of the large class who had not the opportunity to clearly understand the message of the church which undertook the reformation.

(d) At the Latter Rain, the Sabbath is proclaimed more fully. To whom?

[1] To those who have not yet had the testing truth. God’s church already had their cases settled. Now they will take the message to those who have not yet heard the testing truth.

[2] Expression "more fully" is synonymous to loud voice and loud cry. "This enraged the nominal Adventists as they could not refute the Sabbath truth.’ Revelation 14:9 Great Controversy, pp. 606-607.

(3) At the time when the Latter Rain is poured out, Christ is still in the sanctuary; and there is a time of trouble. This is not Jacob’s trouble. This is also called the time of God’s destructive judgments. This is when the saints proclaimed the message [especially the Sabbath] more fully. 85-86.

(a) What is the controversy? The Sabbath was proclaimed more fully, with a loud voice and with the greatest power the message enters new fields.

(b) What will happen? Thousands are awakened.

(c) They go to their leaders.

(d) The leaders invent fables.

(e) But the people want a thus saith the Lord.

(f) The Sabbath is proclaimed, also the fall and sins of Babylon coupled with spiritualism and the message to come out of her My people.

(g) When the clergy can do nothing although it will use almost superhuman effort because of the power of the Holy Spirit, they then appeal to the civil power.

[1] Why? Because the church cannot issue a civil decree.

[2] They can never legislate to keep a day under a civil penalty. But they will do so with the civil power.

(h) Then the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold and decided.

8. The Sunday Decree is the final test. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority, receive the seal o
