Objections to Sealing of 144,000

Objection #1: After the special resurrection, there is to be no more tribulation. They are no longer afraid for the rainbow comes before the partial resurrection therefore, they cannot be part of that number because the 144,000 must go through great tribulation

Statement in question:

"Upon the crystal sea before the throne, that sea of glass as it were mingled with fire,—so resplendent is it with the glory of God,—are gathered the company that have ‘gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark and over the number of his name.’ With the Lamb upon Mount Zion, ‘having the harps of God,’ they stand, the hundred and forty and four thousand that were redeemed from among men; and there is heard, as the sound of many waters, and as the sound of a great thunder, ‘the voice of harpers harping with their harps.’ And they sing ‘a new song’ before the throne, a song which no man can learn save the hundred and forty and four thousand. It is the song of Moses and the Lamb—a song of deliverance. None but the hundred and forty-four thousand can learn that song; for it is the song of their experience—an experience such as no other company have ever had. ‘These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.’ These, having been translated from the earth, from among the living, are counted as the ‘first fruits unto God and to the Lamb.’ Revelation 15:2, 3; 14:1-5. ‘These are they which came out of great tribulation;’ they have passed through the time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation; they have endured the anguish of the time of Jacob’s trouble; they have stood without an intercessor through the final outpouring of God’s judgments. But they have been delivered, for they have ‘washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.’ ‘In their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault’ before God. ‘Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.’ They have seen the earth wasted with famine and pestilence, the sun having power to scorch men with great heat, and they themselves have endured suffering, hunger, and thirst. But ‘they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.’ Revelation 7:14-17." Great Controversy, pp. 648-649.

"With shouts of triumph, jeering, and imprecation, throngs of evil men are about to rush upon their prey, when, lo, a dense blackness, deeper than the darkness of the night, falls upon the earth. Then a rainbow, shining with the glory from the throne of God, spans the heavens and seems to encircle each praying company. The angry multitudes are suddenly arrested. Their mocking cries die away. The objects of their murderous rage are forgotten. With fearful; forebodings they gaze upon the symbol of God’s covenant and long to be shielded from its overpowering brightness." Great Controversy, pp. 635-636.

Answer:

1. It is true that the 144,000 have gone through great tribulation. But, can we honestly say that after the special resurrection there is to be no more trials? Can we say that there will be no more attempt by the wicked to destroy the children of God? Does the glory of God stop the wicked world, who are ruled by the Prince of Darkness himself, from trying to attack the people of God again?

a. Before we answer that statement directly, let us take a look at events after the 1,000 years. The wicked are resurrected and "Satan consults with his angels, and then with these kings and conquerors and mighty men. They look upon the strength and numbers on their side, and declare that the army within the city is small in comparison with theirs, and that it can be overcome. They lay their plans to take possession of the riches and glory of the New Jerusalem. All immediately begin to prepare for battle. Skillful artisans construct implements of war. Military leaders, famed for their success, marshals the throngs of warlike men into companies and divisions.

"At last the order to advance is given, and the countless host moves on—an army such as was never summoned by earthly conquerors, such as the combined forces of all ages since war began on earth could never equal. Satan, the mightiest of warriors, leads the van, and his angels unite their forces for this final struggle. Kings and warriors are in his train, and the multitudes follow in vast companies, each under its appointed leader, et cetera." Great Controversy, p. 664:1, 2

b. Even though that vast multitude see the glory of God, visible as it never was here on this earth with God’s visible presence together with all the redeemed and all the holy angels, they still proceed to make an attempt at conquering the city of God. Therefore, we cannot expect these wicked to leave the saints of God alone just because of their glorification. They didn’t leave Christ alone in the garden when He was glorified either. Therefore, let us take a look at the chronology of events to see if the wicked do try to kill them after the special resurrection.

2. Let us begin with the special resurrection: "Graves are opened, and ‘many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth. . . awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law." Great Controversy, p.637:1.

a. Basically this is telling us that all who have accepted the Three Angel’s Messages since its beginning in the Autumn of 1844, are now resurrected in a glorified state—BUT not in an immortal state!

(1) This we all [who are alive together with the resurrected ones at the first resurrection] receive at the last trump when Jesus comes again: "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality." 1 Corinthians 15:51-53.

b. And what is the purpose of this special resurrection? "All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law."

(1) Not long after this special resurrection, they hear that covenant of peace: "The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus’ coming, and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people. Like peals of loudest thunder His words roll through the earth. The Israel of God stand listening, with their eyes fixed upward. Their countenances are lighted up with His glory, and shine as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai. The wicked cannot look upon them. And when the blessing is pronounced on those who have honored God by keeping His Sabbath holy, there is a mighty shout of victory." Great Controversy, p.640:2.

(a) Therefore, the newly resurrected ones are able to understand this everlasting covenant for this is why they were resurrected.

(2) It is interesting to note who is only able to understand this voice: "Soon we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming. [The same event] The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake. When God spoke the time, He poured upon us the Holy Ghost, and our faces began to light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai." Early Writings, p. 15:0.

(a) Therefore, only the 144,000 know and understand that voice that delivers the everlasting covenant; and all who have died in the faith of the third angel know and understand that voice.

3. Do the wicked now dare make an attempt at their life? "Soon we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming. The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake. When God spake the time, He poured upon us the Holy Spirit, and our faces began to light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 59:1.

(1) This is the same event when all the living saints hear the everlasting covenant.

a. "The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads were the words God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing Jesus’ new name. At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us into prison, when we would stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and they would fall helpless to the ground. Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us, who could wash one another’s feet, and salute the brethren with a holy kiss, and they worshipped at our feet." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 59:2.

b. Yes, even then they make an attempt to violently cast the saints into prison.

4. But at what point in time are the saints actually delivered from the time of Jacob’s trouble? "About four months since, I had a vision of events, all in the future. And I saw the time of trouble, such as never was,—Jesus told me it was the time of Jacob’s trouble, and that we should be delivered out of it by the voice of God. Just before we entered it, we all received the seal of the living God. Then I saw the four Angels cease to hold the four winds. And I saw famine, pestilence and sword, nation rose against nation, and the whole world was in confusion. Then we cried to God for deliverance day and night till we began to hear the bells on Jesus’s garment. And I saw Jesus rise up in the Holiest, and as he came out we heard the tinkling of bells, and knew our High Priest was coming out. Then we heard the voice of God which shook the heavens and the earth, and gave the 144,000 the day and hour of Jesus’s coming. Then the saints were free, united and full of the glory of God, for he had turned their captivity. And I saw a flaming cloud come where Jesus stood and he laid off his priestly garment and put on his kingly robe, took his place on the cloud which carried him to the east where it first appeared to the saints on earth, a small black cloud, which was the sign of the Son of Man. While the cloud was passing from the Holiest to the east which took a number of days, the synagogue of Satan worshipped at the saints feet." The Day-Star, February 15, 1846:2.

a. We are delivered out of the time of Jacob’s trouble by the voice of God?

(1) Which voice of God because we have seen in the above that there is a voice of God at the special resurrection and one afterward when He declares the day and hour of Jesus’s coming?

(2) Later in the paragraph it states that it is the voice of God which gave the 144,000 the day and hour of Jesus’s coming.

5. Therefore, we must conclude that those who come up at the special resurrection do come out of great tribulation because the deliverance from it does not take place till after the special resurrection.

Objection #2: How can the resurrected saints cry for deliverance from the heathen around them who want to thrust them into prison and kill them? And how can they receive deliverance?

Statements in Question:

1. "I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues. These plagues enraged the wicked against the righteous; they thought that we had brought the judgments of God upon them and that if they could rid the earth of us, the plagues would then be stayed. A decree went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day and night for deliverance. This was the time of Jacob’s trouble. Then all the saints cried out with anguish of spirit, and were delivered by the voice of God. The 144,000 triumphed. Their faces were lighted up with the glory of God. Then I was shown a company who were howling in agony. On their garments was written in large characters, ‘Thou art weighed in the balance, and found wanting.’ I asked who this company were. The angel said, ‘These are they who have once kept the Sabbath and have given it up.’ I heard them cry with a loud voice, ‘We have believed in Thy coming, and taught it with energy.’ And while they were speaking, their eyes would fall upon their garments and see the writing, and then they would wail aloud. I saw that they had drunk of the deep waters, and fouled the residue with their feet—trodden the Sabbath underfoot—and that was why they were weighed in the balance and found wanting." Early Writings, pp. 36-37.

2. "Great power was with these chosen ones. Said the angel, ‘Look ye!’ My attention was turned to the wicked, or unbelievers. They were all astir. The zeal and power with the people of God had aroused and enraged them. Confusion, confusion, was on every side. I saw measures taken against the company who had the light and power of God. Darkness thickened around them; yet they stood firm, approved of God, and trusting in Him. I saw them perplexed; next I heard them crying unto God earnestly. Day and night their cry ceased not: ‘Thy will, O God, be done! If it can glorify Thy name, make a way of escape for Thy people! Deliver us from the heathen around about us. They have appointed us unto death; but Thine arm can bring salvation.’ These are all the words which I can bring to mind. All seemed to have a deep sense of their unworthiness and manifested entire submission to the will of God; yet, like Jacob, every one, without an exception, was earnestly pleading and wrestling for deliverance." Early Writings, p. 272:1.

3. "Soon we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming. The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake. When God spake the time, He poured upon us the Holy Spirit, and our faces began to light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai.

4. "I saw that God will in a wonderful manner preserve His people through the time of trouble. As Jesus poured out His soul in agony in the garden, they will earnestly cry and agonize day and night for deliverance. The decree will go forth that they must disregard the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and honor the first day, or lose their lives; but they will not yield, and trample under their feet the Sabbath of the Lord, and honor an institution of papacy. Satan’s host and wicked men will surround them, and exult over them, because there will seem to be no way of escape for them. But in the midst of their revelry and triumph, there is heard peal upon peal of the loudest thunder. The heavens have gathered blackness, and are only illuminated by the blazing light and terrible glory from heaven, as God utters His voice from His holy habitation.

"The foundations of the earth shake; buildings totter and fall with a terrible crash. The sea boils like a pot, and the whole earth is in terrible commotion. The captivity of the righteous is turned, and with sweet and solemn whisperings they say to one another: ‘We are delivered. It is the voice of God.’ With solemn awe they listen to the words of the voice. The wicked hear, but understand not the words of the voice of God. They fear and tremble, while the saints rejoice. Satan and his angels, and wicked men, who had been exulting that the people of God were in their power, that they might destroy them from off the earth, witness the glory conferred upon those who have honored the holy law of God. They behold the faces of the righteous lighted up and reflecting the image of Jesus. Those who were so eager to destroy the saints cannot endure the glory resting upon the delivered ones, and they fall like dead men to the earth. Satan and evil angels flee from the presence of the saints glorified. Their power to annoy them is gone forever." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 353:4-354:1.

Answer

1. This question has already been answered in Objection #1. The wicked are still around the saints and they try to cast them into prisons, according to Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 59:3.

a. After that last attempt, "Soon our eyes were drawn to the east, for a small black cloud had appeared, about half as large as a man’s hand, which we all knew was the sign of the Son of man. In solemn silence we all gazed on the cloud as it drew nearer, and became lighter, glorious, and still more glorious, till it was a great white cloud. The bottom appeared like fire; a rainbow was over the cloud, while around it were ten thousand angels, singing a most lovely song; and upon it sat the Son of man. His hair was white and curly and lay on His shoulders, and upon His head were many crowns. His feet had the appearance of fire; in His right hand was a sharp sickle, in His left a silver trumpet. His eyes were as a flame of fire, which searched His children through and through.

"Then all faces gathered paleness, and those that God had rejected gathered blackness. Then we all cried out: ‘Who shall be able to stand? Is my robe spotless?’ The angels ceased to sing, and there was a time of awful silence, when Jesus spoke: ‘Those who have clean hands and pure hearts shall be able to stand; My grace is sufficient for you.’ At this, our faces lighted up, and joy filled every heart. And the angels struck a note higher and sang again, while the cloud drew still nearer the earth. Then Jesus’ silver trumpet sounded, as He descended on the cloud, wrapped in flames of fire. He gazed on the graves of the sleeping saints, then raised His eyes and hands to heaven, and cried: ‘Awake! Awake! Awake! ye that sleep in the dust, and arise.’ Then there was a mighty earthquake. The graves opened, and the dead came up clothed with immortality. The 144,000 shouted, ‘Alleluia!’ As they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed, and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, p. 60:1, 2.

2. This is the final deliverance of God’s people, and they are delivered out of great tribulation as the wicked have just tried to imprison them.

a. Each of the living saints still questioned their standing with God: "Then all faces gathered paleness, and those that God had rejected gathered blackness. Then we all [living saints] cried out: ‘Who shall be able to stand? Is my robe spotless?’"

b. It is only at the voice of Jesus that every righteous soul finally is certain of their standing with God: "Those who have clean hands and pure hearts shall be able to stand; My grace is sufficient for you.’ At this, our faces lighted up, and joy filled every heart."

c. The reading of the rest of the above paragraph ["The graves opened, and the dead came up clothed with immortality. The 144,000 shouted, ‘Alleluia!’ as they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed, and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air."] strongly indicates that only the 144,000 saints are alive when Jesus comes again.

3. Keep in mind that this is the final deliverance from Satan and his hosts. According to the statement from the Day Star article in Objection #1, the deliverance from Jacob’s trouble comes at the time the voice is heard declaring the day and hour of Jesus’s coming.

Objection #3: The Latter Rain is to fit men for translation. Since there was no Latter rain during the time of our early pioneers and has not come yet then no one of those living at that time could have been fitted for translation. And, how is it possible for the resurrected saints to experience this?

Statements in Question

1. "God leads His people on step by step. He brings them up to different points which are calculated to manifest what is in the heart. Some endure at one point, but fall off at the next. At every advanced point the heart is tested, and tried a little closer. If the professed people of God find their hearts opposed to the straight work of God, it should convince them that they have a work to do to overcome, or be spewed out of the mouth of the Lord. Said the angel, ‘God will bring his work closer and closer to test them, and prove every one of his people.’ Some are willing to receive one point, but when God brings them to another testing point, they shrink from it and stand back, because they find it strikes directly at some cherished idol. Here they have opportunity to see what is in their hearts that shuts out Jesus. They prize something higher than the truth, and their hearts are not prepared to receive Jesus. Individuals are tested and proved a length of time to see if they will sacrifice their idols, and heed the counsel of the True Witness. If they will not be purified through obeying the truth, and overcome their selfishness, their pride and evil passions, the angels of God have their charge, ‘They are joined to their idols, let them alone,’ and they pass on to their work, leaving them with their evil traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels. Those who come up to every point, and stand every test, and overcome, be the price what it may, have heeded the counsel of the True Witness, and they will be fitted by the latter rain for translation." Vol. 2, Spiritual Gifts, pp. 225-226.

2. "As the members of the body of Christ approach the period of their last conflict, ‘the time of Jacob’s trouble,’ they will grow up into Christ, and will partake largely of His Spirit. As the third message swells to a loud cry, and as great power and glory attend the closing work, the faithful people of God will partake of that glory. It is the latter rain which revives and strengthens them to pass through the time of trouble. Their faces will shine with the glory of that light which attends the third angel. (RH May 27, 1862)." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 984:4.

Answer

1. It is no question that the Latter Rain is to prepare the people of God for translation.

a. But, will the Latter Rain make an impure heart pure in that preparation! "The third angel’s message is swelling into a loud cry, and you must not feel at liberty to neglect the present duty, and still entertain the idea that at some future time you will be the recipients of great blessing, when without any effort on your part a wonderful revival will take place. . . . Today you are to have your vessel purified, that it maybe ready for the heavenly dew, ready for the showers of the latter rain; for the later rain will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from every defilement. It is our work today to yield our souls to Christ, that we may be fitted for the time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord—fitted for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. . . RH March 22, 1893." Evangelism, pp. 701-702.

(1) The Latter Rain will only fill those souls that are already purified from every defilement.

(2) In 1893 the third angel was already swelling into a loud cry.

(3) The Latter Rain will not come to cleanse us of sin but to prepare us for the final events.

b. Since that is the case, every sealed person who had died in the faith of the third angel’s message has been sealed only when he or she had attained perfection of character by God’s standard.

2. Another question: Will there be any outpouring of the Holy Spirit in great measure after the special resurrection? "Soon we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming. The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake. When God spake the time, He poured upon us the Holy Spirit, and our faces began to light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai.

"The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads were the words God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing Jesus’ new name. At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us into prison, when we would stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and they would fall helpless to the ground. Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us, who could wash one another’s feet, and salute the brethren with a holy kiss, and they worshipped at our feet." a. So then, after the saints hear the day and hour of Jesus’ coming [this includes the resurrected ones], the Holy Spirit is poured out in special measure.

b. As a result of this, their faces "light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai."

c. It is only after this special outpouring that the wicked rush violently up to lay hands on the saints.

d. Therefore, the resurrected saints are prepared by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit for translation.

Objection #4: Those resurrected at the special resurrection cannot be part of the 144,000 because they did not endure the suffering, hunger, and thirst.

Statement in Question:

1. Answer

1. Let us remember the nature of their suffering: "The people of God will not be free from suffering; but while persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer for want of food they will not be left to perish. That God who cared for Elijah will not pass by one of His self-sacrificing children. He who numbers the hairs of their head will care for them, and in time of famine they shall be satisfied. While the wicked are dying from hunger and pestilence, angels will shield the righteous and supply their wants. To him that ‘walketh righteously’ is the promise: ‘Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.’ ‘When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.’ Isaiah 33:15,16; 41:17." Great Controversy, p. 629:2.

a. It has been nothing strange for God’s people to have suffered persecution and distress and to endure privation and suffering even before the time of trouble. Therefore, all the sealed have gone through somewhat that experience.

Objection #5: In order to be one of the 144,000, a person must go through the fourth plague—scorching sun.

Statement in Question:

1. Same statement as in Objection #4. "They have seen the earth wasted with famine and pestilence, the sun having power to scorch men with great heat, and they themselves have endured suffering, hunger, and thirst." Great Controversy, pp. 648-649.

Answer:

1. Let us also remember that the plague of the scorching sun is not universal: "When Christ ceases His intercession in the sanctuary, the unmingled wrath threatened against those who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark (Revelation 14:9,10), will be poured out. The plagues upon Egypt when God was about to deliver Israel were similar in character to those more terrible and extensive judgments which are to fall upon the world just before the final deliverance of God’s people. Says the Revelator, in describing those terrific scourges: ‘There fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.’ The sea ‘became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.’ And ‘the rivers and fountains of waters., . . became blood.’ Terrible as these inflictions are, God’s justice stands fully vindicated. The angel of God declares: ‘Thou are righteous, O Lord, . . . because Thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and Thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.’ Revelation 16:2-6. By condemning the people of God to death, they have as truly incurred the guilt of their blood as if it had been shed by their hands. In like manner Christ declared the Jews of His time guilty of all the blood of holy men which had been shed since the days of Abel; for they possessed the same spirit and were seeking to do the same work with these murderers of the prophets.

"In the plague that follows, power is given to the sun ‘to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat.’ v 8, 9. The prophets thus describe the condition of the earth at this fearful time: ‘The land mourneth;…because the harvest of the field is perished….All the trees of the field are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.’ ‘The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate…How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture….The rivers of water are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.’ ‘The songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.’ Joel 1:10-12, 17-20; Amos 8:3

"These plagues are not universal, or the inhabitants of the earth would be wholly cut off. Yet they will be the most awful scourges that have ever been known to mortals. All the judgments upon men, prior to the close of probation, have been mingled with mercy. The pleading blood of Christ has shielded the sinner from receiving the full measure of his guilt; but in the final judgment, wrath is poured out unmixed with mercy." Great Controversy, pp. 627:3-629:0.

a. Since these plagues are not universal, and the scorching of the sun is mentioned as one of these, then all the living saints will not even be where the scorching sun is unless we expect all of them to be in one locality [which cannot be the case since the final warning message is to go throughout the whole world and will gather God’s people from all the earth].

b. We also have indication that these plagues are not poured out and then stopped before the next one is let loose.

(1) For example, we read of the first plague: "And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image." Revelation 16:2.

(2) Upon reading of the fifth plague, we find this sore still around: "And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds." Verse 10, 11.

c. In comparing these texts, we clearly see that:

(1) The plagues are not universal, therefore, all the living of the 144,000 do not even see that plague.

(2) These plagues have a beginning but do not end when the next plague begins.

(a) As in the example, when the first was poured out, it was still accomplishing its work when the fifth began.

2. This all brings us to another question: In the text in question we read that the 144,000 must witness the scorching of the sun. "They have seen the earth wasted with famine and pestilence, the sun having power to scorch men with great heat, and they themselves have endured suffering, hunger, and thirst."

a. As we have seen, not all the righteous living at the beginning of the outpouring of the fourth plague witness that event. So then, how can it be said that they have seen it?

b. The same way that the Bible still refers to Thomas being of the twelve when there were only eleven: "But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came." John 20:24.

(1) We all know that Judas hanged himself before the crucifixion: "Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. . . And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself." Matthew 27:3-5.

(2) It is clear in this passage that the disciples were known as the twelve even after there was one missing.

(a) In order to keep the number to twelve as they were already known, Peter suggested another to be chosen—Matthias. Acts 1:16-26.

3. This also answers another question, namely in reference to those saints who come up at the special resurrection.

a. How can it be said, if they compose part of the 144,000, that they have seen the fourth plague?

b. Let us remember that the fourth plague does not stop at the beginning of the fifth but continues on.

c. It is not universal either.

d. Therefore, some of the resurrected saints that come up in the area where the scorching of the sun takes place do indeed witness that event, but those that are resurrected in a different area will not.

Objection #6: The sister, mentioned in Vol. 2, Selected Messages, p 263:2, 3, would rest not go through the time of trouble, therefore, she is not part of the 144,000 for they go through the time of trouble.

Statement in Question:

1. "I hardly know what to say to you. The news of your wife’s death was to me overwhelming. I could hardly believe it and can hardly believe it now. God gave me a view last Sabbath night which I will write…

"I saw that she was sealed and would come up at the voice of God and stand upon the earth, and would be with the 144,000. I saw we need not mourn for her; she would rest in the time of trouble, and all that we could mourn for was our loss in being deprived of her company. I saw her death would result in good." Vol. 2, Selected Messages, p. 263:2, 3.

Answer:

1. In Revelation 14:13 we read the following: "And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."

a. Yes she will rest in the time of trouble, but her works do follow her.

b. According to Revelation 22:12, Jesus says that every person will receive a reward according to his works: "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

c. Therefore, this Sister must receive her reward in accordance to the work of the third angel who seals his subjects: "I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, ‘Fearful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the wheat from the tares, and seal, or bind, the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention.’" Early Writings, p. 118:1.

d. Her reward is to be sealed, to be a part of the 144,000, alive when Jesus comes again to this sin-cursed earth for His chosen ones.

Objection #7: 144,000 are translated from among the living and not the dead. They must have never died in order to be a part of the 144,000. It is impossible to be translated and at the same time to have seen death for translation means taken to heaven without seeing death.

Statements in Question:

1. "Upon the crystal sea before the throne, that sea of glass as it were mingled with fire,--so resplendent is it with the glory of God,—are gathered the company that have ‘gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark and over the number of his name.’ With the Lamb upon Mount Zion, ‘having the harps of God,’ they stand, the hundred and forty and four thousand that were redeemed from among men; and there is heard, as the sound of many waters, and as the sound of a great thunder, ‘the voice of harpers harping with their harps.’ And they sing ‘a new song’ before the throne, a song which no man can learn save the hundred and forty and four thousand. It is the song of Moses and the Lamb—a song of deliverance. None but the hundred and forty-four thousand can learn that song; for it is the song of their experience—an experience such as no other company have ever had. ‘These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.’ These, having been translated from the earth, from among the living, are counted as the ‘first fruits unto God and to the Lamb.’ Revelation 15:2, 3; 14:1-5." Great Controversy, pp. 648-649.

2. "God’s people will separate themselves from the unrighteous practices of those around them, and will seek for purity of thought, and holy conformity to His will, until His divine image will be reflected in them. Like Enoch they will be fitting for translation to Heaven. While they endeavor to instruct and warn the world, they will not conform to the spirit and customs of unbelievers, but will condemn them by their holy conversation and godly example. Enoch’s translation to Heaven just before the destruction of the world by a flood, represents the translation of all the living righteous from the earth previous to its destruction by fire. The saints will be glorified in the presence of those who have hated them for their loyal obedience to God’s righteous commandments." Vol. 3, Spiritual Gifts, p. 59:2.

3. "We are living in an evil age. The perils of the last days thicken around us. Because iniquity abounds, the love of many waxes cold. Enoch walked with God three hundred years. Now the shortness of time seems to be urged as a motive to seek righteousness. Should it be necessary that the terrors of the day of God be held before us in order to compel us to right action? Enoch’s case is before us. Hundreds of years he walked with God. He lived in a corrupt age, when moral pollution was teeming all around him; yet he trained his mind to devotion, to love purity. His conversation was upon heavenly things. He educated his mind to run in this channel, and he bore the impress of the divine. His countenance was lighted up with the light which shineth in the face of Jesus. Enoch had temptations as well as we. He was surrounded with society no more friendly to righteousness than is that which surrounds us. The atmosphere he breathed was tainted with sin and corruption, the same as ours; yet he lived a life of holiness. He was unsullied with the prevailing sins of the age in which he lived. So may we remain pure and uncorrupted. He was a representative of the saints who live amid the perils and corruptions of the last days. For his faithful obedience to God he was translated. So, also, the faithful, who are alive and remain, will be translated. They will be removed from a sinful and corrupt world to the pure joys of heaven." Vol. 2, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 121-122.

4. "But the Lord reproves and corrects the people who profess to keep His law. He points out their sins and lays open their iniquity because He wishes to separate all sin and wickedness from them, that they may perfect holiness in His fear and be prepared to die in the Lord or to be translated to heaven. God rebukes, reproves, and corrects them, that they may be refined, sanctified, elevated, and finally exalted to His own throne." Vol. 2, Testimonies for the Church, p. 453:0.

5. "‘Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.’ Matthew 5:8. For three hundred years Enoch had been seeking purity of heart, that he might be in harmony with heaven. For three centuries he had walked with God. Day by day he had longed for a closer union; nearer and nearer had grown the communion, until God took him to Himself. He had stood at the threshold of the eternal world, only a step between him and the land of the blest; and now the portals opened, the walk with God, so long pursued on earth, continued, and he passed through the gates of the holy city, the first from among men to enter there.

"‘By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; . . . for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.’ Hebrews 11:5.

To such communion God is calling us. As was Enoch’s must be their holiness of character who shall be redeemed from among men at the Lord’s second coming." Vol. 8, Testimonies for the Church, p. 331:1-3.

6. "Elijah was a type of the saints who will be living on the earth at the time of the second advent of Christ and who will be ‘changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump,’ without tasting of death. 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52. It was as a representative of those who shall be thus translated that Elijah, near the close of Christ’s ministry, was permitted to stand with Moses by the side of the Saviour on the mount of transfiguration. In these glorified ones, the disciples saw in miniature a representation of the kingdom of the redeemed. They beheld Jesus clothed with the light of heaven; they heard the ‘voice out of the cloud’ (Luke 9:35), acknowledging Him as the Son of God; they saw Moses, representing those who will be raised from the dead at the time of the second advent; and there also stood Elijah, representing those who at the close of earth’s history will be changed from mortal to immortal and be translated to heaven without seeing death." Prophets and Kings, p. 227:2.

7. "Moses upon the mount of transfiguration was a witness to Christ’s victory over sin and death. He represented those who shall come forth from the grave at the resurrection of the just. Elijah, who had been translated to heaven without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon the earth at Christ’s second coming, and who will be ‘changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump;’ when ‘this mortal must put on immortality,’ and ‘this corruptible must put on incorruption.’ 1 Cor. 15:51-53. Jesus was clothed with the light of heaven, as He will appear when He shall come ‘the second time without sin unto salvation.’ For He will come ‘in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.’ Heb. 9:28; Mark 8:38. The Saviour’s promise to the disciples was now fulfilled. Upon the mount the future kingdom of glory was represented in miniature,—Christ the King, Moses a representative of the risen saints, and Elijah of the translated one." Desire of Ages, pp. 421-422.

8. "Jesus had told His disciples that there were some standing with Him who should not taste of death till they should see the kingdom of God come with power. At the transfiguration this promise was fulfilled. The countenance of Jesus was there changed and shone like the sun. His raiment was white and glistening. Moses was present to represent those who will be raised from the dead at the second appearing of Jesus. And Elijah, who was translated without seeing death, represented those who will be changed to immortality at Christ’s second coming and will be translated to heaven without seeing death. The disciples beheld with astonishment and fear the excellent majesty of Jesus and the cloud that overshadowed them, and heard the voice of God in terrible majesty, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son; hear Him.’" Early Writings, p. 164:3.

Answer:

1. Let us examine these statements carefully. In statement 1. we read that the "hundred and forty and four thousand" were "redeemed from among men." They were "translated from the earth, from among the living."

a. When Jesus comes again, those who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message are very alive at that time. "Graves are opened, and ‘many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth. . . awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law. . . " Great Controversy, p. 637:1.

(1) They are now resurrected—alive and well. They are in a better condition than when they were alive for now they are glorified.

b. Not long after this special resurrection, they hear the day and hour of Jesus’ coming as yet in the future: "The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus’ coming, and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people." Great Controversy, p. 640:2.

c. And then comes the second coming of Christ: "Soon there appears in the east a small black cloud, about half the size of a man’s hand. It is the cloud which surrounds the Saviour and which seems in the distance to be shrouded in darkness. The people of God know this to be the sign of the Son of man. In solemn silence they gaze upon it as it draws nearer the earth, becoming lighter and more glorious, until it is a great white cloud, its base a glory like consuming fire, and above it the rainbow of the covenant. Jesus rides forth as a mighty conqueror." Great Controversy, pp. 640-641.

d. Since the 144,000 compose the living saints when Jesus comes, it naturally must include the ones risen some time before that event, even those who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message.

2. In statement 2. of the above, we read that "Enoch’s translation to Heaven just before the destruction of the world by a flood, represents the translation of all the living righteous from the earth previous to its destruction by fire."

a. So then, Enoch represented those who were resurrected at the special resurrection for they are a part of "all the living righteous from the earth previous to its destruction by fire."

b. This is confirmed by the statement in 3. and 4.: "He [Enoch] was a representative of the saints who live amid the perils and corruptions of the last days. For his faithful obedience to God he was translated. So, also, the faithful, who are alive and remain, will be translated."

(1) Did our forefathers living in this message since 1844 live amid the perils and corruptions of the last days?

(2) If so, they are represented by faithful Enoch.

(3) Since they will be alive when Jesus comes, they will be translated.

c. The statement in 5. makes the same proposition: "As was Enoch’s must be their holiness of character who shall be redeemed from among men at the Lord’s second coming."

3. We’ll come back to 6. later.

4. For now, let’s look at 7, "Elijah, who had been translated to heaven without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon the earth at Christ’s second coming, and who will be ‘changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump."

a. Here it is also clear that Elijah represented those who are alive at Christ’s second coming—including the resurrected ones as they are alive.

b. So then, here we have six statements that mention that these two men represent all those who are alive when Jesus comes.

5. Now, lets look at the remaining two 6. and 8.: "Elijah was a type of the saints who will be living on the earth at the time of the second advent of Christ and who will be ‘changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump,’ without tasting of death." "And Elijah, who was translated without seeing death, represented those who will be changed to immortality at Christ’s second coming and will be translated to heaven without seeing death."

a. It is interesting to note that Enoch is not even mentioned in these two statements.

b. Before we make any conclusions, let us examine these two quotations.

c. Both are in reference to the experience at the mount of transfiguration.

(1) Elijah represented one class

(2) While Moses represented another.

d. According to these statements, there are only two classes of redeemed. "Moses was present to represent those who will be raised from the dead at the second appearing of Jesus."

(1) This is the first resurrection when Jesus comes.

(2) But, those who died in the faith of the third angel’s message, are alive at this time.

(a) They cannot be represented by Moses since they are not resurrected at the second coming.

(b) They were represented before that time.

(c) Therefore, Moses does not represent them.

e. Elijah represents the translated ones who are alive and watch Jesus come again.

(1) This includes those who came up at the special resurrection.

(2) So then, why does it mention that they are the ones that do not taste death?

(3) What death is this talking about?

(a) Let us look at Elijah’s experience: "At the gate of Jezreel, Elijah and Ahab separated. The prophet, choosing to remain outside the walls, wrapped himself in his mantle, and lay down upon the bare earth to sleep. The king, passing within, soon reached the shelter of his palace and there related to his wife the wonderful events of the day and the marvelous revelation of divine power that had proved to Israel that Jehovah is the true God and Elijah His chosen messenger. As Ahab told the queen of the slaying of the idolatrous prophets, Jezebel, hardened and impenitent, became infuriated. She refused to recognize in the events on Carmel the overruling providence of God, and, still defiant, she boldly declared that Elijah should die.

"That night a messenger aroused the weary prophet and delivered to him the word of Jezebel: ‘So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.’" Prophets and Kings, p. 159:1, 2.

(b) Here we see that Elijah was now under the death decree.

[1] The only way that he was saved from it was by his translation to heaven without falling under that decree for Jezebel never renounced it.

[a] The time for the death was to take place the next day but he wasn’t killed then. She still tried after the time she planned to execute him.

[2] And so it is with the 144,000. The death decree goes into effect and the wicked try to kill the saints. Then God delivers them: "It was at midnight that God chose to deliver His people. As the wicked were mocking around them, suddenly the sun appeared, shining in his strength, and the moon stood still. The wicked looked upon the scene with amazement, while the saints beheld with solemn joy the token of their deliverance. Signs and wonders followed in quick succession. Everything seemed turned out of its natural course. The streams ceased to flow. Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other. But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, shaking the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. The graves were opened and those who had died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law." Early Writings, p. 285:1.

[a] The rest of the 144,000 are then resurrected.

(c) As we have already learned in Objection #1, the wicked still try to kill God’s people after this resurrection. Therefore, the death decree is not repealed. It is still in effect; and even the resurrected ones are delivered from the death decree as they are not allowed by God to be killed: "So I saw that the people of God, who had faithfully warned the world of His coming wrath, would be delivered. God would not suffer the wicked to destroy those who were expecting translation and who would not bow to the decree of the beast or receive his mark. I saw that if the wicked were permitted to slay the saints, Satan and all his evil host, and all who hate God, would be gratified. And oh, what a triumph it would be for his satanic majesty to have power, in the last closing struggle, over those who had so long waited to behold Him whom they loved! Those who have mocked at the idea of the saints’ going up will witness the care of God for His people and behold their glorious deliverance." Early Writings, p. 284:1

(4) As we saw in Objection #1 point #4 of the answer that the real deliverance came, not at the time of the special resurrection but at the time when the voice of God declares the day and hour of Jesus’s coming.

6. Therefore, they, who have only slept for a period of time, are "translated to heaven without seeing" or "tasting" of that "death"—the death decree.

Objection #8: In connection with the following statements, several objections are raised:

1. Have the resurrected ones kept God’s law in sight of the heathen around them?

2. There is no wrestling with God with the ones in the special resurrection.

3. Who were the ones expecting translation?

4. Who are the ones that warn the world of the coming wrath of God and are subsequently delivered from the death decree?

5. Since 1844, no one could even be able to receive the mark of the beast.

6. The resurrected ones did not cry day and night for deliverance from the death decree.

Statements in Question:

1. But they have been delivered, for they have ‘washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.’ ‘In their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault’ before God. ‘Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.’ They have seen the earth wasted with famine and pestilence, the sun having power to scorch men with great heat, and they themselves have endured suffering, hunger, and thirst. But ‘they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.’ Revelation 7:14-17." Great Controversy, pp. 648-649.

2. THE TIME OF TROUBLE

"I saw the saints leaving the cities and villages, and associating together in companies, and living in the most solitary places. Angels provided them food and water, while the wicked were suffering from hunger and thirst. Then I saw the leading men of the earth consulting together, and Satan and his angels busy around them. I saw a writing, copies of which were scattered in different parts of the land, giving orders that unless the saints should yield their peculiar faith, give up the Sabbath, and observe the first day of the week, the people were at liberty after a certain time to put them to death. But in this hour of trial the saints were calm and composed, trusting in God and leaning upon His promise that a way of escape would be made for them. In some places, before the time for the decree to be executed, the wicked rushed upon the saints to slay them; but angels in the form of men of war fought for them. Satan wished to have the privilege of destroying the saints of the Most High; but Jesus bade His angels watch over them. God would be honored by making a covenant with those who had kept His law, in the sight of the heathen round about them; and Jesus would be honored by translating, without their seeing death, the faithful, waiting ones who had so long expected Him.

"Soon I saw the saints suffering great mental anguish. They seemed to be surrounded by the wicked inhabitants of the earth. Every appearance was against them. Some began to fear that God had at last left them to perish by the hand of the wicked. But if their eyes could have been opened, they would have seen themselves surrounded by angels of God. Next came the multitude of the angry wicked, and next a mass of evil angels, hurrying on the wicked to slay the saints. But before they could approach God’s people, the wicked must first pass this company of mighty, holy angels. This was impossible. The angels of God were causing them to recede and also causing the evil angels who were pressing around them to fall back.

"It was an hour of fearful, terrible agony to the saints. Day and night they cried unto God for deliverance. To outward appearance, there was no possibility of their escape. The wicked had already begun to triumph, crying out, ‘Why don’t you go up and save your lives?’ But the saints heeded them not. Like Jacob, they were wrestling with God. The angels longed to deliver them, but they must wait a little longer, the people of God must drink of the cup and be baptized with the baptism. The angels, faithful to their trust, continued their watch. God would not suffer His name to be reproached among the heathen. The time had nearly come when He was to manifest His mighty power and gloriously deliver His saints. For His name’s glory He would deliver every one of those who had patiently waited for Him and whose names were written in the book.

I was pointed back to faithful Noah. When the rain descended and the flood came, Noah and his family had entered the ark, and God had shut them in. Noah had faithfully warned the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, while they had mocked and derided him. And as the waters descended upon the earth, and one after another was drowning, they beheld that ark, of which they had made so much sport, riding safely upon the waters, preserving the faithful Noah and His family. So I saw that the people of God, who had faithfully warned the world of His coming wrath, would be delivered. God would not suffer the wicked to destroy those who were expecting translation and who would not bow to the decree of the beast or receive his mark. I saw that if the wicked were permitted to slay the saints, Satan and all his evil host, and all who hate God, would be gratified. And oh, what a triumph it would be for his satanic majesty to have power, in the last clos-ing struggle, over those who had so long waited to behold Him whom they loved! Those who have mocked at the idea of the saints’ going up will witness the care of God for His people and behold their glorious deliverance.

"As the saints left the cities and villages, they were pursued by the wicked, who sought to slay them. But the swords that were raised to kill God’s people broke and fell as powerless as a straw. Angels of God shielded the saints. As they cried day and night for deliverance, their cry came up before the Lord.

DELIVERANCE OF THE SAINTS

"It was at midnight that God chose to deliver His people. As the wicked were mocking around them, suddenly the sun appeared, shining in his strength, and the moon stood still. The wicked looked upon the scene with amazement, while the saints beheld with solemn joy the token of their deliverance. Signs and wonders followed in quick succession. Everything seemed turned out of its natural course. The streams ceased to flow. Dark, heavy clouds came up and clashed against each other. But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, shaking the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. The graves were opened and those who had died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law.

"The sky opened and shut and was in commotion. The mountains shook like a reed in the wind and cast out ragged rocks all around. The sea boiled like a pot and cast out stones upon the land. And as God spoke the day and hour of Jesus’ coming and delivered the everlasting covenant to His people, He spoke one sentence and then paused, while the words were rolling through the earth. The Israel of God stood with their eyes fixed upward, listening to the words as they came from the mouth of Jehovah and rolled through the earth like peals of loudest thunder. It was awfully solemn. At the end of every sentence the saints shouted, ‘Glory! Hallelujah!’ Their countenances were lighted up with the glory of God, and they shone with glory as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai. The wicked could not look upon them for the glory. And when the never-ending blessing was pronounced on those who had honored God in keeping His Sabbath holy, there was a mighty shout of victory over the beast and over his image.

"Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest. I saw the pious slave rise in victory and triumph, and shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master was in confusion and knew not what to do; for the wicked could not understand the words of the voice of God." Early Writings, pp. 282:2-286:1.

Answer:

1. Have the resurrected ones kept God’s law in sight of the heathen around them?

a If anyone has any idea of the history of the Advent people, they would know that there was much persecution and opposition in the beginning of the movement.

b The three angel’s messages have gone through heathen lands since the very beginning.

c As a result, many have been led to keep the commandments of God, thus keeping God’s law in sight of the heathen around them.

d. Furthermore, in the above Early Writings statement it says that they resurrect for a purpose: "to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law."

(1) Did they keep the law? Yes, that is why they resurrect.

(2) Did they keep it in the sight of the heathen around them? The same statement goes on to say that they give "a mighty shout of victory over the beast and over his image."

(a) If they did not keep the law in the sight of the heathen around them, they would not be able to give a shout of victory.

2. There is no wrestling with God with the ones in the special resurrection.

a. Compare this question with the statement written in 1895: "Now is the time for earnest wrestling with God." Evangelism, p. 383:1.

3. Who were the ones expecting translation?

a. The following statements give the idea that they, who were living at the time of the early advent movement were expecting translation:

(1) "Let children no longer be exposed to the temptations of the cities that are ripe for destruction. The Lord has sent us warning and counsel to get out of the cities. Then let us make no more investments in the cities. Fathers and mothers, how do you regard the souls of your children? Are you preparing the members of your families for translation into the heavenly courts? Are you preparing them to become members of the royal family? children of the heavenly King?" Vol. 2, Selected Messages, p. 355:1 (1905).

(2) "God is leading out a people and preparing them for translation." Testimonies, vol 5, p 30:1 (1882).

b. All these were expecting translation.

c. If we study the writings of those early Adventist pioneers who are now sleeping in the dust of the earth and who will come up in that special resurrection, we will see that they indeed expected translation.

4. Who are the ones that warn the world of the coming wrath of God and are subsequently delivered from the death decree?

a. We already saw that even the ones resurrected at the beginning of the seventh plague are delivered from the death decree. But, did they warn the world of the coming wrath of God?

b. The answer is found in knowing when the third angel, the sealing angel, was sent to do his work. "As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another mighty angel with a third message to the world." Early Writings, p. 254:1.

(1) When did the ministration of Jesus close in the holy place? We all know the answer to be the Autumn of 1844.

(2) So then, the third angel has been sounding since that time.

(a) And what does that angel represent? "These angels represent those who receive the truth, and with power open the gospel to the world." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, pp. 978-979.

(b) The third angel represented the people of God proclaiming that message.

(3) Then we can be assured that the warning connected with it was also proclaimed.

(4) And what is that warning? "And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation." Revelation 14:9,10.

c. Did they give this message? Just read their writings and you will see that they indeed did.

d. As we saw in other objections, the saints are not delivered from the death decree and from the time of Jacob’s trouble until the voice of God declares the day and hour of Jesus’ coming.

(1) And at that time, the faithful who have died in the third angel’s message are alive.

(2) For this reason the passage in Early Writings described the all the living saints, including the resurrected ones—as they are truly living: "And as God spoke the day and hour of Jesus’ coming and delivered the everlasting covenant to His people, He spoke one sentence and then paused, while the words were rolling through the earth. The Israel of God stood with their eyes fixed upward, listening to the words as they came from the mouth of Jehovah and rolled through the earth like peals of loudest thunder. It was awfully solemn. At the end of every sentence the saints shouted, ‘Glory! Hallelujah!’"

(3) Why did they shout Glory Hallelujah? Because they were now delivered.

5. Since 1844, no one could even be able to receive the mark of the beast.

a. Notice the following quotation carefully: "The change of the Sabbath is a sign or mark of the authority of the Romish Church. Those who, understanding the claims of the fourth commandment, choose to observe the false sabbath in the place of the true, are thereby paying homage to that power by which alone it is commanded. The mark of the beast is the papal sabbath, which has been accepted by the world in the place of the day of God’s appointment." Signs of the Times November 8, 1899:1.

(1) So then, whenever a person comes to understand the fourth commandment properly, and, in spite of that chooses to observe the false sabbath, he is paying homage to the beast and thus receiving its mark.

b. What about people who do not understand the Sabbath? The next paragraph continues: "There are true Christians in every church, not excepting the Roman Catholic communion. None are condemned until they have had the light and have seen the obligation of the fourth commandment." Signs of the Times November 8, 1899:2.

c. But the time will come when all Sunday worshippers will have received the mark of the beast: "But when the decree shall go forth enforcing the counterfeit sabbath, and the loud cry of ‘the third angel’ shall warn men against the worship of the beast and his image, the line will be clearly drawn between the false and the true. Those who still continue in transgression will receive the mark of the beast." Signs of the Times, 11-8-1899:2.

6. The resurrected ones did not cry day and night for deliverance from the death decree

a. Compare this question with the answer to Objection #5 and 7.

Objection #9: All became food for worms because it is impossible for any to be translated since all died.

Statement in Question:

1. "But we were yet to pass through another severe trial. At the conference a very solemn vision was given me. I saw that some of those present would be food for worms, some subjects for the seven last plagues, and some would be translated to heaven at the second coming of Christ, without seeing death. Sr. Bonfoey remarked to a sister as we left the meetinghouse, ‘I feel impressed that I am one that will soon be food for worms.’ The conference closed Monday. Thursday Sr. B. sat at the table with us apparently well. She then went to the Office as usual, to help get off the paper. In about two hours I was sent for. Sr. B. had been suddenly taken very ill. My health had been very poor, yet I hastened to suffering Clara. In a few hours she seemed some better. The next morning we had her brought home in a large chair, and she was laid upon her own bed from which she was never to rise. Her symptoms became alarming, and we had fears that a tumor, which had troubled her for nearly ten years had broken inwardly. It was so, and mortification was doing its work.

"Friday about seven o’clock she fell asleep. She had her senses until her eyes closed in death. She stated that her pilgrimage was almost ended, and that she had no fears of death. We united in prayer, and she responded. She kissed us, and bid us an affectionate farewell. She seemed very solicitous for my health, and was grieved if I manifested distress. We were unprepared for her death. To lose her, was a living loss. Eight years she had shared our joys and trials, and she had never proved untrue. We have missed her cheerful society, and her sisterly affection, and her care in our family. We laid her in Battle Creek burying-ground to rest until the sleeping saints awake to immortality." Vol. 2, Spiritual Gifts, pp. 208:2-209:1 (May 1856).

Answer:

1. After considering the previous objections, this one vanishes.

2. We can believe that this statement is true: "At the conference a very solemn vision was given me. I saw that some of those present would be food for worms, some subjects for the seven last plagues, and some would be translated to heaven at the second coming of Christ, without seeing death."

a. Notice that Clara Bonfoey will not resurrect at the special resurrection at the voice of God and mentioned when others died, but she is "to rest until the sleeping saints awake to immortality."

(1) This is none other than the resurrection at the coming of Jesus.

b. As we have seen in Objection #7, without seeing death is in reference to the death decree even as Elijah escaped the death decree of that wicked Jezabel.

c. Furthermore, we accept the writings of Sister Ellen G. White as inspired and when she saw that some would be translated without seeing death, we believe that that is the case.

Objection #10: How can the Sabbath itself be the seal or mark that is placed upon the 144,000?

Answer:

1. "Again the destroying angel is to pass through the land. There is to be a mark placed upon God’s people, and that mark is the keeping of His holy Sabbath. We are not to follow our own will and judgment; and flatter ourselves that God will come to our terms. God tests our faith by giving us some part to act in connection with His interposition in our behalf. To those who comply with the conditions, His promises will be fulfilled; but all that venture to depart from His instructions, to follow a way of their own choosing, will perish with the wicked when His judgments are visited upon the earth." Vol. 2, Testimony Treasures, pp. 183:3-184:1.
