Sealing of God’s People
Scripture Reading: Revelation 7:1-4
I. Introduction: A Life & Death Message
1. A special Bible prophecy for these last days. Isaiah 58:12-14.
a. They that shall be of Thee. b. Build = Sabbath restored.
c. Among people it identifies them; but also identifies their God to them. Ezekiel 20:20.
(1) What does knowing God mean? John 17:3.
2. The Sabbath was a divine institution in Eden. Genesis 2:1-3.
a. What is to be done with this divine institution? Jeremiah 6:16 (18:15).
b. When is this reform on Sabbath to be completed? "In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. The breach made in the law at the time the Sabbath was changed by man, is to be repaired. God’s remnant people, standing before the world as reformers, are to show that the law of God is the foundation of all enduring reform and that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is to stand as a memorial of creation, a constant reminder of the power of God. In clear, distinct lines they are to present the necessity of obedience to all the precepts of the Decalogue. Constrained by the love of Christ, they are to co-operate with Him in building up the waste places. They are to be repairers of the breach, restorers of paths to dwell in. See verse 12." Prophets and Kings p 678:2.
3. When did this special Sabbath reform begin?
a. Light begins to shine on Sabbath. "When we began to present the light on the Sabbath question, we had no clearly defined idea of the third angel’s message of Revelation 14:9-12. The burden of our testimony as we came before the people was that the great second advent movement was of God, that the first and second messages had gone forth, and that the third was to be given. We saw that the third message closed with the words: ‘Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’ And we as clearly saw as we now see that these prophetic words suggested a Sabbath reform; but as to what the worship of the beast mentioned in the message was, or what the image and the mark of the beast were, we had no defined position." Vol. 1 Testimonies for the Church pp. 78-79.
b. This was soon after 1844. "God had committed to His people a work to be accomplished on earth. The third angel’s message was to be given, the minds of believers were to be directed to the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ had entered to make atonement for His people. The Sabbath reform was to be carried forward. The breach in the law of God must be made up. The message must be proclaimed with a loud voice, that all the inhabitants of earth might receive the warning. The people of God must purify their souls through obedience to the truth, and be prepared to stand without fault before Him at His coming.
"Had Adventists, after the great disappointment in 1844, held fast their faith, and followed on unitedly in the opening providence of God, receiving the message of the third angel and in the power of the Holy Spirit proclaiming it to the world, they would have seen the salvation of God, the Lord would have wrought mightily with their efforts, the work would have been completed, and Christ would have come ere this to receive His people to their reward.
"But in the period of doubt and uncertainty that followed the disappointment, many of the advent believers yielded their faith. Dissensions and divisions came in. The majority opposed with voice and pen the few who, following in the providence of God, received the Sabbath reform and began to proclaim the third angel’s message. Many who should have devoted their time and talents to the one purpose of sounding warning to the world, were absorbed in opposing the Sabbath truth, and in turn, the labor of its advocates was necessarily spent in answering these opponents and defending the truth. Thus the work was hindered, and the world was left in darkness. Had the whole Adventist body united upon the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, how widely different would have been our history!
"It was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be thus delayed. God did not design that His people, Israel, should wander forty years in the wilderness. He promised to lead them directly to the land of Canaan, and establish them there a holy, healthy, happy people. But those to whom it was first preached, went not in ‘because of unbelief’ (Hebrews 3:19). Their hearts were filled with murmuring, rebellion, and hatred, and He could not fulfill His covenant with them." Vol. 1 Selected Messages pp. 67:9-68:3.
(1) If they would have accepted this message of the third angel, Christ would have come.
c. When was this time? "After Jesus opened the door of the most holy, the light of the Sabbath was seen, and the people of God were tested, as the children of Israel were tested anciently, to see if they would keep God’s law." Early Writings p 254:2.
(1) When is this? "I saw that the present test on the Sabbath could not come until the mediation of Jesus in the holy place was finished and He had passed within the second veil; therefore Christians who fell asleep before the door was opened into the most holy, when the midnight cry was finished, at the seventh month, 1844, and who had not kept the true Sabbath, now rest in hope; for they had not the light and the test on the Sabbath which we now have since that door was opened. I saw that Satan was tempting some of God’s people on this point. Because so many good Christians have fallen asleep in the triumphs of faith and have not kept the true Sabbath, they were doubting about its being a test for us now." Early Writings p 42-43.
(a) After 7th month (October) in 1844.
4. What is the Sabbath to make it so important?
a. Seal is revealed in the Sabbath. "The sign, or seal, of God is revealed in the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, the Lord’s memorial of creation." Vol. 8 Testimonies for the Church p 117:3.
"The Sabbath is not introduced as a new institution but as having been founded at creation. It is to be remembered and observed as the memorial of the Creator’s work. Pointing to God as the Maker of the heavens and the earth, it distinguishes the true God from all false gods. All who keep the seventh day signify by this act that they are worshipers of Jehovah. Thus the Sabbath is the sign of man’s allegiance to God as long as there are any upon the earth to serve Him. The fourth commandment is the only one of all the ten in which are found both the name and the title of the Lawgiver. It is the only one that shows by whose authority the law was given. Thus it contains the seal of God, affixed to His law as evidence of its authenticity and binding force." Patriarchs and Prophets p 307:2.
(1) Other statements on the Sabbath commandment containing the seal of God: Vol. 2 Testimonies for the Church, p. 468:1; Vol. 6, Testimonies for the Church, p. 350:3; Vol. 8, Testimonies for the Church, p. 94:2; Great Controversy p. 452:1; 640:1.
b. Why are the whole three angel’s messages so important? "I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body. God looked upon them with approbation. I was shown three steps—the first, second, and third angel’s messages. Said my accompanying angel, ‘Woe to him who shall move a block or stir a pin of these messages. The true understanding of these messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs upon the manner in which they are received.’" Early Writings, pp. 258-259.
(1) Soul’s destiny hangs on manner in which messages are received. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12.
(2) We must love this truth.
c. What will third angel’s message do to us and what should we do with it? "The message of the third angel is to prepare a people to stand in these days of peril. It is to be proclaimed with a loud voice and is to accomplish a work which few realize." Vol. 8 Testimonies for the Church, p 94:1.
"All are now deciding their eternal destiny. Men need to be aroused to realize the solemnity of the time, the nearness of the day when human probation shall be ended. Decided efforts should be made to bring the message for this time prominently before the people. The third angel is to go forth with great power. Let none ignore this work or treat it as of little importance." Vol. 6 Testimonies for the Church p 16:4.
(1) Prepare a people.
d. In this presentation, no line of truth is to be weakened. "There is to be no change in the general features of our work. It is to stand as clear and distinct as prophecy has made it. We are to enter into no confederacy with the world, supposing that by so doing we could accomplish more. If any stand in the way, to hinder the advancement of the work in the lines that God has appointed, they will displease God. No line of truth that has made the Seventh-day Adventist people what they are is to be weakened. We have the old landmarks of truth, experience, and duty, and we are to stand firmly in defense of our principles in full view of the world." Vol. 6 Testimonies for the Church, p 17:2.
"We are God’s commandment-keeping people. For the past fifty years every phase of heresy has been brought to bear upon us, to becloud our minds regarding the teaching of the Word—especially concerning the ministration of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, and the message of Heaven for these last days, as given by the angels of the fourteenth chapter of Revelation. Messages of every order and kind have been urged upon Seventh-day Adventists, to take the place of the truth which, point by point, has been sought out by prayerful study, and testified to by the miracle-working power of the Lord. But the waymarks which have made us what we are, are to be preserved, and they will be preserved, as God has signified through His Word and the testimony of His Spirit. He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority." Vol. 1 Selected Messages p. 208:2.
"A wealth of moral influence has been brought to us in the last half century. Through His Holy Spirit the voice of God has come to us continually in warning and instruction to confirm the faith of the believers in the Spirit of prophecy. Repeatedly the word has come, Write the things that I have given you to confirm the faith of My people in the position they have taken. Time and trial have not made void the instruction given, but through years of suffering and self-sacrifice have established the truth of the testimony given. The instruction that was given in the early days of the message is to be held as safe instruction to follow in these its closing days. Those who are indifferent to this light and instruction must not expect to escape the snares which we have been plainly told will cause the rejecters of light to stumble, and fall, and be snared, and be taken. If we study carefully the second chapter of Hebrews, we shall learn how important it is that we hold steadfastly to every principle of truth that has been given." Vol. 1 Selected Messages p 41:1.
(1) How serious is accepting old Advent faith? "There is no work in our world so great, so sacred, and so glorious, no work that God honors so much, as this gospel work. The message presented at this time is the last message of mercy for a fallen world. Those who have the privilege of hearing this message, and who persist in refusing to heed the warning, cast away their last hope of salvation. There will be no second probation." Vol. 6 Testimonies for the Church, p 19:2.
5. Who are God’s commandment keeping people? "The worshipers of God will be especially distinguished by their regard of the fourth commandment, since this is the sign of God’s creative power and the witness to His claim upon man’s reverence and homage. The wicked will be distinguished by their efforts to tear down the Creator’s memorial and to exalt the institution of Rome. In the issue of the conflict all Christendom will be divided into two great classes, those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark." Vol. 9 Testimonies for the Church, p 16:2.
a. What is the sign they receive? "In the issue of the great contest two parties are developed, those who ‘worship the beast and his image,’ and receive his mark, and those who receive ‘the seal of the living God,’ who have the ‘Father’s name written in their foreheads.’ This is not a visible mark." Vol. 7 Bible Commentary p 980:4. = "seal."
b. Upon what does receiving this seal depend? "Our own course of action will determine whether we shall receive the seal of the living God or be cut down by the destroying weapons. Already a few drops of God’s wrath have fallen upon the earth; but when the seven last plagues shall be poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation, then it will be forever too late to repent and find shelter. No atoning blood will then wash away the stains of sin." Vol. 5 Testimonies for the Church, p 212:4.
(1) Our OWN course of action.
(2) The terms "destroying weapons" and "God’s wrath" refer to the seven last plagues.
(a) The next paragraph shows that that takes place after the close of human probation. "‘And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book.’ When this time of trouble comes, every case is decided; there is no longer probation, no longer mercy for the impenitent. The seal of the living God is upon His people. This small remnant, unable to defend themselves in the deadly conflict with the powers of earth that are marshaled by the dragon host, make God their defense. The decree has been passed by the highest earthly authority that they shall worship the beast and receive his mark under pain of persecution and death. May God help His people now, for what can they then do in such a fearful conflict without His assistance!" Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 212-213.
c. Our eternal destiny hangs upon the manner in which we receive these messages. 258-259.
(1) Upon the manner in which they are received.
d. What is our message to the world? "The message of Revelation 14 is the message that we are to bear to the world. It is the bread of life for these last days." Vol. 8 Testimonies for the Church, p 27:1.
(1) What is the first part of Revelation 14? Revelation 14:1-5.
(a) The sealing of 144,000.
e. Therefore, what is our duty? "The Lord has shown me that precious souls are starving, and dying for want of the present, sealing truth, the meat in due season; and that the swift messengers should speed on their way, and feed the flock with the present truth. I heard an Angel say, ‘speed the swift messengers, speed the swift messengers; for the case of every soul will soon be decided, either for Life, or for Death.’" Vol. 1, Present Truth #4 p. 23.
B. Where do we find the Sealing Message? Revelation 7:1-4.
1. Questions to determine.
a. Chronology of Chapter 7 (where does it fit?).
b. Relationship of 4 angels holding 4 winds.
c. Who is the sealing Angel?
d. When is the sealing angel sent to do his work?
e. What do we have to do in order to be sealed?
II. When is Time for This Sealing Angel to Work?
A. Chronology & Angels Holding 4 winds.
1. Revelation 6 closes with events of the 6th seal.
"12. And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
"13. And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
"14. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
"15. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
"16. And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
"17. For the great day of his wrath is come: and who shall be able to stand?" Revelation 6:12-17.
a. Earthquake of November 1, 1755. "Prophecy not only foretells the manner and object of Christ’s coming, but presents tokens by which men are to know when it is near. Said Jesus: ‘There shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars.’ Luke 21:25. ‘The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.’ Mark 13:24-26. The Revelator thus describes the first of the signs to precede the second advent: ‘There was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.’ Revelation 6:12.
"These signs were witnessed before the opening of the nineteenth century. In fulfillment of this prophecy there occurred, in the year 1755, the most terrible earthquake that has ever been recorded. Though commonly known as the earthquake of Lisbon, it extended to the greater part of Europe, Africa, and America. It was felt in Greenland, in the West Indies, in the island of Madeira, in Norway and Sweden, Great Britain and Ireland. It pervaded an extent of not less than four million square miles. In Africa the shock was almost as severe as in Europe. A great part of Algiers was destroyed; and a short distance from Morocco, a village containing eight or ten thousand inhabitants was swallowed up. A vast wave swept over the coast of Spain and Africa engulfing cities and causing great destruction." Great Controversy p. 304:2.
b. Dark Day etc. May 19, 1780. "Twenty-five years later appeared the next sign mentioned in the prophecy—the darkening of the sun and moon. What rendered this more striking was the fact that the time of its fulfillment had been definitely pointed out. In the Saviour’s conversation with His disciples upon Olivet, after describing the long period of trial for the church,—the 1260 years of papal persecution, concerning which He had promised that the tribulation should be shortened,—He thus mentioned certain events to precede His coming, and fixed the time when the first of these should be witnessed: ‘In those days, after that tribulation the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light.’ Mark 13:24. The 1260 days, or years, terminated in 1798. A quarter of a century earlier, persecution had almost wholly ceased. Following this persecution, according to the words of Christ, the sun was to be darkened. On the 19th of May, 1780, this prophecy was fulfilled.
"‘Almost, if not altogether alone, as the most mysterious and as yet unexplained phenomenon of its kind, . . . stands the dark day of May 19, 1780,—a most unaccountable darkening of the whole visible heavens and atmosphere in New England.’" Great Controversy p. 306:1,2.
c. Falling of stars, November, 13:1833. "In 1833, two years after Miller began to present in public the evidences of Christ’s soon coming, the last of the signs appeared which were promised by the Saviour as tokens of His second advent. Said Jesus: ‘The stars shall fall from heaven.’ Matthew 24:29. And John in the Revelation declared, as he beheld in vision the scenes that should herald the day of God: ‘The stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.’ Revelation 6:13. This prophecy received a striking and impressive fulfillment in the great meteoric shower of November 13, 1833. That was the most extensive and wonderful display of falling stars which has ever been recorded; ‘the whole firmament, over all the United States, being then, for hours, in fiery commotion!’" Great Controversy, p. 333:1.
d. Heavens depart as scroll. "The King of kings descends upon the cloud, wrapped in flaming fire. The heavens are rolled together as a scroll, the earth trembles before Him, and every mountain and island is moved out of its place. ‘Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about Him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people.’Psalm 50:3,4." Great Controversy, 641-642.
(1) This is at the second coming of Christ.
2. Could the sealing work of Chapter 7 take place after heavens depart as scroll?
a. The work of sealing takes place while the four angels are holding the four winds. Revelation 7:1-3.
b. What are the four winds? Daniel 7:2; Jeremiah 51:1,2 (25:32,33; 49:36).
(1) Winds = all elements of strife and commotion. "If such scenes as this are to come, such tremendous judgments on a guilty world, where will be the refuge for God’s people? How will they be sheltered until the indignation be overpast? John sees the elements of nature—earthquake, tempest, and political strife—represented as being held by four angels. These winds are under control until God gives the word to let them go. There is the safety of God’s church." Testimonies to Ministers, p. 444:3 fp.
c. How long are the four winds held? Revelation 7:1-3.
"I saw four angels who had a work to do on the earth, and were on their way to accomplish it. Jesus was clothed with priestly garments. He gazed in pity on the remnant, then raised His hands, and with a voice of deep pity cried, ‘My blood, Father, My blood, My blood, My blood!’ Then I saw an exceeding bright light come from God, who sat upon the great white throne, and was shed all about Jesus. Then I saw an angel with a commission from Jesus, swiftly flying to the four angels who had a work to do on the earth, and waving something up and down in his hand, and crying with a loud voice, ‘Hold! Hold! Hold! Hold! until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads.’
"I asked my accompanying angel the meaning of what I heard, and what the four angels were about to do. He said to me that it was God that restrained the powers, and that He gave His angels charge over things on the earth; that the four angels had power from God to hold the four winds, and that they were about to let them go; but while their hands were loosening, and the four winds were about to blow, the merciful eye of Jesus gazed on the remnant that were not [all] sealed, and He raised His hands to the Father and pleaded with Him that He had spilled His blood for them. Then another angel was commissioned to fly swiftly to the four angels and bid them hold, until the servants of God were sealed with the seal of the living God in their foreheads." Early Writings p 38:1, 2.
(1) The word above in [] is found in the original Present Truth article.
(2) When is this time? "I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues." Early Writings p 36:2.
(a) So, the four winds are also called the seven last plagues.
(3) What does it mean till end of the work in the sanctuary? "Every case had been decided for life or death. While Jesus had been ministering in the sanctuary, the judgment had been going on for the righteous dead, and then for the righteous living. Christ had received His kingdom, having made the atonement for His people and blotted out their sins. The subjects of the kingdom were made up. The marriage of the Lamb was consummated. And the kingdom, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, was given to Jesus and the heirs of salvation, and Jesus was to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
"As Jesus moved out of the most holy place, I heard the tinkling of the bells upon His garment; and as He left, a cloud of darkness covered the inhabitants of the earth. There was then no mediator between guilty man and an offended God. While Jesus had been standing between God and guilty man, a restraint was upon the people; but when He stepped out from between man and the Father, the restraint was removed and Satan had entire control of the finally impenitent. It was impossible for the plagues to be poured out while Jesus officiated in the sanctuary; but as His work there is finished, and His intercession closes, there is nothing to stay the wrath of God, and it breaks with fury upon the shelterless head of the guilty sinner, who has slighted salvation and hated reproof. In that fearful time, after the close of Jesus’ mediation, the saints were living in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor. Every case was decided, every jewel numbered. Jesus tarried a moment in the outer apartment of the heavenly sanctuary, and the sins which had been confessed while He was in the most holy place were placed upon Satan, the originator of sin, who must suffer their punishment. Early Writings pp. 280:1-281:0.
(4) Thus the sealing goes on till the close of human probation.
(a) So then, right when the sealing is finished, the time of trouble begins. "Just before we entered it [the time of trouble], we all received the seal of the living God. Then I saw the four angels cease to hold the four winds. And I saw famine, pestilence and sword, nation rose against nation, and the whole world was in confusion." Vol. 7 Bible Commentary p 968:6.
(b) "We may talk of the blessings of the Holy Spirit, but unless we prepare ourselves for its reception, of what avail are our works? Are we striving with all our power to attain to the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we seeking for His fullness, ever pressing toward the mark set before us—the perfection of His character? When the Lord’s people reach this mark, they will be sealed in their foreheads. Filled with the Spirit, they will be complete in Christ, and the recording angel will declare, ‘It is finished.’" (Review and Herald June 10, 1902) Vol. 6, Bible Commentary, p. 1118:1.
d. Therefore, this sealing work cannot take place after the heavens depart as a scroll in Revelation 6:14.
3. Can the sealing work take place before the falling of the stars in Revelation 6:13?
a. We have already understood that seal of God is revealed in true Sabbath keeping.
b. If a person desires to be sealed, he must keep the Sabbath. "Thus the distinction is drawn between the loyal and the disloyal. Those who desire to have the seal of God in their foreheads must keep the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. Thus they are distinguished from the disloyal, who have accepted a man-made institution in place of the true Sabbath. The observance of God’s rest day is a mark of distinction between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not." (Review and Herald, April 23, 1901). Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 981:2.
("Those who would have the seal of God in their foreheads must keep the Sabbath of the fourth commandment. This is what distinguishes them from the disloyal, who have accepted a man-made institution in the place of the true Sabbath. The observance of God’s rest day is the mark of distinction between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 970:2.)
c. When was true Sabbath-keeping revived as a test for God’s people? "I saw that the present test on the Sabbath could not come until the mediation of Jesus in the holy place was finished and He had passed within the second veil; therefore Christians who fell asleep before the door was opened into the most holy, when the midnight cry was finished, at the seventh month, 1844, and who had not kept the true Sabbath, now rest in hope; for they had not the light and the test on the Sabbath which we now have since that door was opened. I saw that Satan was tempting some of God’s people on this point. Because so many good Christians have fallen asleep in the triumphs of faith and have not kept the true Sabbath, they were doubting about its being a test for us now." Early Writings, pp. 42-43.
(1) Those living before 1844 could not have been sealed for they were not yet tested on the Sabbath issue.
(2) Therefore, the sealing work cannot take place till after verse 13 of Revelation 6.
(a) Therefore, our conclusion is that the sealing work of chapter seven in Revelation takes place between verses 13 & 14 of Chapter 6.
B. Who is the Sealing Angel?
1. Revelation 7:
a. Angel ascending from east (sun rising). Revelation 7:2.
b. The sealing angel. Revelation 7:2.
c. The mightiest of angels. There is the safety of God’s church. The angels of God do His bidding, holding back the winds of the earth, that the winds should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree, until the servants of God should be sealed in their foreheads. The mighty angel is seen ascending from the east (or sunrising). This mightiest of angels has in his hand the seal of the living God, or of Him who alone can give life, who can inscribe upon the foreheads the mark or inscription, to whom shall be granted immortality, eternal life. It is the voice of this highest angel that had authority to command the four angels to keep in check the four winds until this work was performed, and until he should give the summons to let them loose. . . ." Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 444-445.
(1) This must be the one who took Lucifer’s place.
(2) Mightiest of the Lord’s host occupies the position from which Satan fell and was on the hills of Bethlehem proclaiming Christ’s birth. "Now, priests and rulers, where is the power of your guard?--Brave soldiers that have never been afraid of human power, are now as captives taken without sword or spear. The face they look upon is not the face of mortal warrior; it is the face of the mightiest of the Lord’s host. This messenger is he who fills the position from which Satan fell. It is he who on the hills of Bethlehem proclaimed Christ’s birth. The earth trembles at his approach, the hosts of darkness flee, and as he rolls away the stone, heaven seems to come down to the earth. The soldiers see him removing the stone as he would a pebble, and hear him cry, Son of God, come forth; Thy Father calls Thee. They see Jesus come forth from the grave, and hear Him proclaim over the rent sepulcher, ‘I am the resurrection and the life.’ As He comes forth in majesty and glory, the angel host bow low in adoration before the Redeemer, and welcome Him with songs of praise." Desire of Ages, pp. 779-780.
(a) This same angel was in Gethsemane. "In this awful crisis, when everything was at stake, when the mysterious cup trembled in the hand of the sufferer, the heavens opened, a light shone forth amid the stormy darkness of the crisis hour, and the mighty angel who stands in God’s presence, occupying the position from which Satan fell, came to the side of Christ. The angel came not to take the cup from Christ’s hand, but to strengthen Him to drink it, with the assurance of the Father’s love." Desire of Ages, p. 693:3.
(b) This was Gabriel. "In the supreme crisis, when heart and soul are breaking under the load of sin, Gabriel is sent to strengthen the divine sufferer, and brace Him to tread His bloodstained path. And while the angel supports His fainting form, Christ takes the bitter cup, and consents to drink its contents. Before the suffering One comes up the wail of a lost and perishing world, and the words come from the blood-stained lips, ‘Nevertheless, if man must perish unless I drink this bitter cup, Thy will, not Mine, be done’" Vol. 5, Bible Commentary, p. 1123:5.
(a) It was Gabriel that was sent to Zecharias. Luke 1:19.
(b) Gabriel = highest angel in heaven: "On heaven’s record of noble men the Saviour declared that there stood not one greater than John the Baptist. The work committed to him was one demanding not only physical energy and endurance, but the highest qualities of mind and soul. So important was right physical training as a preparation for this work that the highest angel in heaven was sent with a message of instruction to the parents of the child. Ministry of Healing, p. 379:4.
(c) Lucifer used to hold this position "Sin originated with him who, next to Christ, had been most honored of God and was highest in power and glory among the inhabitants of heaven." Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 35:1.
(d) Since this charge was given to the mightiest angel in heaven, the work of sealing must be a very important work.
2. Revelation 7 = that shown to Ezekiel in vision. It is the voice of this highest angel that had authority to command the four angels to keep in check the four winds until this work was performed, and until he should give the summons to let them loose. . . .
"This sealing of the servants of God is the same that was shown to Ezekiel in vision." Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 444:3 - 445:2.
a. Same, not similar.
b. Where in Ezekiel? "Who are standing in the counsel of God at this time? Is it those who virtually excuse wrongs among the professed people of God and who murmur in their hearts, if not openly, against those who would reprove sin? Is it those who take their stand against them and sympathize with those who commit wrong? No, indeed! Unless they repent, and leave the work of Satan in oppressing those who have the burden of the work and in holding up the hands of sinners in Zion, they will never receive the mark of God’s sealing approval. They will fall in the general destruction of the wicked, represented by the work of the five men bearing slaughter weapons. Mark this point with care: Those who receive the pure mark of truth, wrought in them by the power of the Holy Ghost, represented by a mark by the man in linen, are those ‘that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done’ in the church. Their love for purity and the honor and glory of God is such, and they have so clear a view of the exceeding sinfulness of sin, that they are represented as being in agony, even sighing and crying. Read the ninth chapter of Ezekiel." Vol. 3, Testimonies for the Church, p. 267:1.
(1) Notice that the five men with slaughter weapons in their hands doing their work is synonymous with the general destruction of the wicked.
(2) Read Ezekiel 9.
(a) Ezekiel 9 is the closing work for the church. "The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and the salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful character. They will always be on the side of faithful and plain dealing with sins which easily beset the people of God. Especially in the closing work for the church, in the sealing time of the one hundred and forty-four thousand who are to stand without fault before the throne of God, will they feel most deeply the wrongs of God’s professed people. This is forcibly set forth by the prophet’s illustration of the last work under the figure of the men each having a slaughter weapon in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side. ‘And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof." Vol. 3 Testimonies for the Church, p. 266:2.
(b) Man with writer’s inkhorn by his side. Ezekiel 9:2.
(c) He is clothed with linen. Ezekiel 9: 3.
(d) He sets the mark. Ezekiel 9:4.
(e) He gives a report of the accomplished work. Ezekiel 9:11.
3. Revelation 14:9-13.
a. What is the work of the Third Angel?
(1) What is purpose of his message? "Those who had accepted the light concerning the mediation of Christ and the perpetuity of the law of God found that these were the truths presented in Revelation 14. The messages of this chapter constitute a threefold warning which is to prepare the inhabitants of the earth for the Lord’s second coming. The announcement, ‘The hour of His judgment is come,’ points to the closing work of Christ’s ministration for the salvation of men. It heralds a truth which must be proclaimed until the Saviour’s intercession shall cease and He shall return to the earth to take His people to Himself. The work of judgment which began in 1844 must continue until the cases of all are decided, both of the living and the dead; hence it will extend to the close of human probation. That men may be prepared to stand in the judgment, the message commands them to ‘fear God, and give glory to Him,’ ‘and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.’ The result of an acceptance of these messages is given in the word: ‘Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’ In order to be prepared for the judgment, it is necessary that men should keep the law of God. That law will be the standard of character in the judgment." Great Controversy, pp. 435:2-436:0.
(a) Closing work for the salvation of men (church).
(b) Prepare a people for the Lord’s second coming.
(c) And to prepare a people to stand in the day of Judgment.
b. What is result of this message?
(1) Announces his work to be finished. Revelation 14:12.
(2) Keeping of God’s commandments. "In Revelation 14, men are called upon to worship the Creator; and the prophecy brings to view a class that, as the result of the threefold message, are keeping the commandments of God. One of these commandments points directly to God as the Creator. The fourth precept declares: ‘The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: . . . for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.’ Exodus 20:10,11. Concerning the Sabbath, the Lord says, further, that it is ‘a sign,...that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.’ Ezekiel 20:20. And the reason given is: ‘For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.’ Exodus 31:17." Great Controversy, p. 437:1.
(3) Especially brings to view the observance of the fourth commandment. "‘The importance of the Sabbath as the memorial of creation is that it keeps ever present the true reason why worship is due to God’—because He is the Creator, and we are His creatures. ‘The Sabbath therefore lies at the very foundation of divine worship, for it teaches this great truth in the most impressive manner, and no other institution does this. The true ground of divine worship, not of that on the seventh day merely, but of all worship, is found in the distinction between the Creator and His creatures. This great fact can never become obsolete, and must never be forgotten.’ —J.N. Andrews, History of the Sabbath, chapter 27. It was to keep this truth ever before the minds of men, that God instituted the Sabbath in Eden; and so long as the fact that He is our Creator continues to be a reason why we should worship Him, so long the Sabbath will continue as its sign and memorial. Had the Sabbath been universally kept, man’s thoughts and affections would have been led to the Creator as the object of reverence and worship, and there would never have been an idolater, an atheist, or an infidel. The keeping of the Sabbath is a sign of loyalty to the true God, ‘Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.’ It follows that the message which commands men to worship God and keep His commandments will especially call upon them to keep the fourth commandment." Great Controversy pp. 437-438.
(a) Sabbath has the seal of God.
(4) Shows the difference between those that keep God’s law and its rejecters. "After the warning against the worship of the beast and his image the prophecy declares: ‘Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.’ Since those who keep God’s commandments are thus placed in contrast with those that worship the beast and his image and receive his mark, it follows that the keeping of God’s law, on the one hand, and its violation, on the other, will make the distinction between the worshipers of God and the worshipers of the beast." Great Controversy pp. 445-446.
(5) Warns against worshipping the beast or his image. "In contrast to those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus, the third angel points to another class, against whose errors a solemn and fearful warning is uttered: ‘If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God.’ Revelation 14:9,10." Great Controversy p 438:1.
(a) This is most fearful threatening ever addressed to mortals. "The most fearful threatening ever addressed to mortals is contained in the third angel’s message. That must be a terrible sin which calls down the wrath of God unmingled with mercy." Great Controversy, p. 449:2.
(b) Why such a terrible warning? "I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, ‘Fearful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the wheat from the tares, and seal or bind, the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention." Early Writings, p. 118:1.
[1] Because he is sealing angel.
c. Man with writer’s ink horn [Ezekiel 9]; sealing angel [Revelation 7]; and third angel [Revelation 14] are the same being responsible for the same work here on earth.
(1)This work on earth is symbolized as a people. "The three angels of Revelation 14 are represented as flying in the midst of heaven, symbolizing the work of those who proclaim the first, second, and third angels’ messages. All are linked together." Vol. 6, Testimonies, p. 17:4.
"Christ is coming the second time, with power unto salvation. To prepare human beings for this event, He has sent the first, second, and third angels’ messages. These angels represent those who receive the truth, and with power open the gospel to the world." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, pp. 978-979.
4. What possibilities do we have during the work of sealing?
a. Sealed for the heavenly garner or to burn. "I saw the rapidity with which this delusion was spreading. A train of cars was shown me, going with the speed of lightning. The angel bade me look carefully. I fixed my eyes upon the train. It seemed that the whole world was on board, that there could not be one left. Said the angel, ‘They are binding in bundles ready to burn.’ Then he showed me the conductor, who appeared like a stately, fair person, whom all the passengers looked up to and reverenced. I was perplexed and asked my attending angel who it was. He said, ‘It is Satan. He is the conductor in the form of an angel of light. He has taken the world captive. They are given over to strong delusions, to believe a lie, that they may be damned. This agent, the next highest in order to him, is the engineer, and other of his agents are employed in different offices as he may need them, and they are all going with lightning speed to perdition.’
"I asked the angel if there were none left. He bade me look in an opposite direction, and I saw a little company traveling a narrow pathway. All seemed to be firmly united, bound together by the truth, in bundles, or companies. Said the angel, ‘The third angel is binding, or sealing, them in bundles for the heavenly garner.’ This little company looked careworn, as if they had passed through severe trials and conflicts. And it appeared as if the sun had just risen from behind a cloud and shone upon their countenances, causing them to look triumphant, as if their victories were nearly won." Early Writings pp. 88:2-89:0.
(1) Sealing and Binding == same thing. "Said the angel, ‘The third angel is binding, or sealing, them in bundles for the heavenly garner.’" Early Writings, p. 89:0.
(2) Sealing time == sealed with God’s seal or with Satan’s mark.
b. Of course, this is speaking of those who understand the present sealing truth of the third angel:
"The change of the Sabbath is a sign or mark of the authority of the Romish church. Those who, understanding the claims of the fourth commandment choose to observe the false sabbath in the place of the true, are thereby paying homage to that power by which alone it is commanded. The mark of the beast is the papal sabbath, which has been accepted by the world in the place of the day of God’s appointment." Signs of the Times, November 8, 1899:1.
"The message containing this warning is the last to be proclaimed before the revelation of the Son of man. The signs which He himself has given declare His coming to be near at hand. For well-nigh forty years has the message of the third angel been sounding. In the issue of the great contest two parties are developed, those who ‘worship the beast and his image,’ and receive his mark, and those who receive the ‘seal of the living God,’ who have the Father’s name written in their foreheads. This is not a visible mark. The time has come when all who have an interest in their soul’s salvation should earnestly and solemnly inquire, What is the seal of God? and what is the mark of the beast? How can we avoid receiving it?" Signs of the Times, November 1, 1899:8.
"There can be only two classes. Each party is distinctly stamped, either with the seal of the living God, or with the mark of the beast or his image. Each son and daughter of Adam chooses either Christ or Barabbas as his general. And all who place themselves on the side of the disloyal are standing under Satan’s black banner, and are charged with rejecting and despitefully using Christ. They are charged with deliberately crucifying the Lord of life and glory." Review and Herald, January 30, 1900:4.
c. Read also "In every case the great decision is to be made whether we shall receive the mark of the beast or his image, or the seal of the living God. And now, when we are on the borders of the eternal world, what can be of so much value to us as to be found loyal and true to the God of heaven? What is there that we should prize above His truth and His law? What education can be given to the students in our schools that is so necessary as a knowledge of ‘What saith the Scriptures." Vol. 6 Testimonies for the Church, pp. 130-131.
d. Those who reject it after knowing it will be left to their own delusions. "Men cannot with impunity reject the warning which God in mercy sends them. A message was sent from heaven to the world in Noah’s day, and their salvation depended upon the manner in which they treated that message. Because they rejected the warning, the Spirit of God was withdrawn from the sinful race, and they perished in the waters of the Flood. In the time of Abraham, mercy ceased to plead with the guilty inhabitants of Sodom, and all but Lot with his wife and two daughters were consumed by the fire sent down from heaven. So in the day of Christ. The Son of God declared to the unbelieving Jews of that generation: ‘Your house is left unto you desolate.’ Matthew 23:38. Looking down to the last days, the same Infinite Power declares, concerning those who ‘received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved’: ‘For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.’ 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12. As they reject the teachings of His word, God withdraws His Spirit and leaves them to the deceptions which they love." Great Controversy, p 431:1.
5. Therefore, Ezekiel 9, Revelation 7, and Revelation 14 speak of one and the same work. As result of this work, only two classes are developed.
C. When is the Sealing Angel sent to do His Work?
1. There are three angels messages in Revelation 14:6-13.
a. The first began in 1833 and was enlarged in 1840-44. "The prophecy of the first angel’s message, brought to view in Revelation 14, found its fulfillment in the Advent movement of 1840-1844. In both Europe and America, men of faith and prayer were deeply moved as their attention was called to the prophecies, and, tracing down the inspired record, they saw convincing evidence that the end of all things was at hand. The Spirit of God urged his servants to give the warning. Far and wide spread the message of the everlasting gospel, ‘Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his Judgment is come.’" Vol. 4, Spirit of Prophecy, p. 222:1.
b. The second angel began in the summer of 1844. "The second angel’s message of Revelation 14 was first preached in the summer of 1844, and it then had a more direct application to the churches of the United States, where the warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed and most generally rejected, and where the declension in the churches had been most rapid. But the message of the second angel did not reach its complete fulfillment in 1844. The churches then experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their refusal of the light of the advent message; but that fall was not complete. As they have continued to reject the special truths for this time they have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can it be said that ‘Babylon is fallen, . . . because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.’ She had not yet made all nations do this. The spirit of world conforming and indifference to the testing truths for our time exists and has been gaining ground in churches of the a Protestant faith in all the countries of Christendom; and these churches are included in the solemn and terrible denunciation of the second angel. But the work of apostasy has not yet reached its culmination." Great Controversy, p. 389:2.
c. The third angel began in the Autumn of 1844. "As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another mighty angel with a third message to the world." Early Writings, p 254:1.
2. How did the Sabbath sealing truth begin? Revelation 7:2.
"Elder James White, in an unpublished letter giving his account of this meeting, writes: ‘We all felt like uniting to ask wisdom from God on the points in dispute; also Brother Bates’s duty in writing. We had an exceedingly powerful meeting. Ellen was again taken off in vision. She then began to describe the Sabbath light, which was the sealing truth. Said she: ‘It arose from the rising of the sun. It arose back there in weakness, but light after light has shone upon it until the Sabbath truth is clear, weighty, and mighty. Like the sun when it first rises, its rays are cold, but as it comes up, its rays are warming and powerful; so the light and power has increased more and more until its rays are powerful, sanctifying the soul; but, unlike the sun, it will never set. The Sabbath light will be at its brightest when the saints are immortal; it will rise higher and higher until immortality comes.’
"‘She saw many interesting things about this glorious sealing Sabbath, which I have not time or space to record. She told Brother Bates to write the things he had seen and heard, and the blessing of God would attend it.’" Life Sketches 116:1, 2 -foot-note.
a. How many were keeping the Sabbath then? "This view was given in 1847 when there were but very few of the Advent brethren observing the Sabbath, and of these but few supposed that its observance was of sufficient importance to draw a line between the people of God and unbelievers." Early Writings p 85:3.
(1)"When we received the light upon the fourth commandment, there were about twenty-five Adventists in Maine who observed the Sabbath; but these were so diverse in sentiment upon other points of doctrine, and so scattered in location, that their influence was very small. There was about the same number, in similar condition, in other parts of New England." Vol. 1 Testimonies for the Church p 77:1.
(2) Among them were James White and Ellen G. White and Joseph Bates (Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 75-76).
b. Although it began in 1844, it was not fully understood then.
c. Vision given in 1848: "At a meeting held in Dorchester, Mass., November, 1848, I had been given a view of the proclamation of the sealing message, and of the duty of the brethren to publish the light that was shining upon our pathway.
"After coming out of vision, I said to my husband: ‘I have a message for you. You must begin to print a little paper and send it out to the people. Let it be small at first; but as the people read, they will send you means with which to print, and it will be a success from the first. From this small beginning it was shown to me to be like streams of light that went clear round the world.’" Life Sketches p 125:1,2.
(1) They continued preaching the doctrine which gave them light and joy. "With the beginning of this work of publishing, we did not cease our labors in preaching the truth, but traveled from place to place, proclaiming the doctrines which had brought so great light and joy to us, encouraging the believers, correcting errors, and setting things in order in the church. In order to carry forward the publishing enterprise, and at the same time continue our labors in different parts of the field, the paper was from time to time moved to different places." Life Sketches p 127:1.
d. What did they publish at this time? Taken from — The Present Truth" Vol. 1#3:
(1) "I saw that the present test on the Sabbath could not come until the mediation of Jesus in the holy place was finished and He had passed within the second veil; therefore Christians who fell asleep before the door was opened into the most holy, when the midnight cry was finished, at the seventh month, 1844, and who had not kept the true Sabbath, now rest in hope; for they had not the light and the test on the Sabbath which we now have since that door was opened. I saw that Satan was tempting some of God’s people on this point. Because so many good Christians have fallen asleep in the triumphs of faith and have not kept the true Sabbath, they were doubting about its being a test for us now." Early Writings, pp. 42-43.
(2) "Satan is now using every device in this sealing time to keep the minds of God’s people from the present, [sealing] truth and to cause them to waver. I saw a covering that God was drawing over His people to protect them in the time of trouble; and every soul that was decided on the truth and was pure in heart was to be covered with the covering of the Almighty.
"Satan knew this, and he was at work in mighty power to keep the minds of as many people as he possible could wavering and unsettled on the truth." Early Writings p. 43:2,3. (March 24, 1849).
(a) The part in [ ] is in original Present Truth article.
(b) "Now" and "present sealing truth"
(3) "I saw that Satan was at work in these ways to distract, deceive, and draw away God’s people, just now in this sealing time." Early Writings, p. 44:1. (March 24, 1849)
(a) "just now" "this sealing time."
(4) "Satan was trying his every art to hold them where they were, until the sealing was past, until the covering was drawn over God’s people, and they left without a shelter from the burning wrath of God, in the seven last plagues. God has begun to draw this covering over His people, and it will soon be drawn over all who are to have a shelter in the day of slaughter. God will work in power for His people; and Satan will be permitted to work also." Early Writings p 44:2. (March 24, 1849)
e. At that time the sealing was already in progress. "My dear brethren and sisters, let the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ be in your minds continually and let them crowd out worldly thoughts and cares. When you lie down and when you rise up, let them be your meditation. Live and act wholly in reference to the coming of the Son of man. The sealing time is very short, and will soon be over. Now is the time, while the four angels are holding the four winds, to make our calling and election sure." Early Writings p 58:2.
(1) Instead of saying that it will soon start, it says that it will "soon be over."
3. Another look:
a. What happened when the door was closed in the holy place. "As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another mighty angel with a third message to the world." Early Writings p 254:1.
(1) When was this? "Sabbath, March 24, 1849, we had a sweet and very interesting meeting with the brethren at Topsham, Maine. The Holy Ghost was poured out upon us, and I was taken off in the Spirit to the city of the living God. Then I was shown that the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ relating to the shut door could not be separated, and that the time for the commandments of God to shine out with all their importance, and for God’s people to be tried on the Sabbath truth, was when the door was opened in the most holy place in the heavenly sanctuary, where the ark is, in which are contained the ten commandments. This door was not opened until the mediation of Jesus was finished in the holy place of the sanctuary in 1844. Then Jesus rose up and shut the door of the holy place, and opened the door into the most holy, and passed within the second veil, where He now stands by the ark, and where the faith of Israel now reaches." Early Writings p 42:1.
(2) Another word for tried is tested.
b. Who followed Jesus into the Most Holy Place? "It was represented to me that the remnant followed Jesus into the most holy place and beheld the ark and the mercy seat, and were captivated with their glory." Early Writings p 255:1.
(1) Remnant of what? Philadelphia. Revelation 3:7-13.
(a) 7 churches = periods not 7 denominations. "The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the world." Acts of the Apostles, p. 585:3.
(2) What was the "open door" in Revelation 3:8? Most Holy Place.
(3) What promise was given to the remnant of Philadelphia? "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; . . . Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name." Revelation 3:7,12.
(a) This is equivalent to the seal of God just like the one the 144,000 receive. "The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads was written, God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing Jesus’ new name. At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us into prison, when we would stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and they would fall helpless to the ground. Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved us who could wash one another’s feet and salute the brethren with a holy kiss, and they worshipped at our feet." Early Writings, p. 15:1.
(b) What place can they enter that others cannot? "And as we were about to enter the holy temple, Jesus raised His lovely voice and said, ‘Only the 144,000 enter this place,’ and we shouted, ‘Alleluia.’
"This temple was supported by seven pillars, all of transparent gold, set with pearls most glorious. The wonderful things I there saw I cannot describe. Oh, that I could talk in the language of Canaan, then could I tell a little of the glory of the better world. I saw there tables of stone in which the names of the 144,000 were engraved in letters of gold." Early Writings, p. 19:0, 1.
(c) The remnant of Philadelphia are promised to be a pillar in the temple of God? How can they be a pillar when only the 144,000 enter that place?
[1] They must be a part of the 144,000.
[2] In order to be that remnant, they must pass through the veil with Jesus into the most holy place in 1844.
(d) How can they be a part of the 144,000 if they have already died?
D. The Special Resurrection. Revelation 14:13.
1. From "henceforth" must mean from some point of time.
a. Which time? It must mean from the time the message preceding it began in 1844.
2. All who die in Lord are blessed but those who die from "henceforth" receive a special blessing. Why?
a. Because they take part in the special resurrection. Daniel 12:1, 2.
(1) Example in 1850.
"Dear Brother:
"I hardly know what to say to you. The news of your wife’s death was to me overwhelming. I could hardly believe it and can hardly believe it now. God gave me a view last Sabbath night which I will write.
"I saw that she was sealed and would come up at the voice of God and stand upon earth, and would be with the 144,000. I saw we need not mourn for her; she would rest in the time of trouble, and all that we could mourn for was our loss in being deprived of her company. I saw her death would result in good." (Letter 10, 1850) Vol. 2 Selected Messages p 263:1,2.
(2) She is to be with the 144,000. Example of with in the Bible.
(a) "This was the last time that Judas was present with the twelve." Review & Herald, May 31, 1898:4.
[1] Was Judas a part of the twelve disciples or, since it said with, that there were thirteen when you included him?

(c) Since the definitions can include both views, we need to look at other statements in order to determine whether they fit or not.
(3) She was sealed.
(a) Who sealed her? "I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, ‘Fearful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the wheat from the tares, and seal or bind, the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention." Early Writings p 118:1.
(b) What was the blessing? Rest in time of trouble.
(c) When shall she resurrect? At the voice of God.
(d) When is voice of God? Revelation 16:17,18.
"‘It is done.’ Revelation 16:17. . .
"Graves are opened, and ‘many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth. . . awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ Daniel 12:2. All who have died in the faith of the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His law. ‘They also which pierced Him’ (Revelation 1:7), those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of His truth and His people, are raised to behold Him in His glory and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient." Great Controversy, pp. 636:1-637:1.
("But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters shaking the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. The graves were opened, and those who had died in the faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept His law." Early Writings, p. 285:1.).
[1] Who came from the graves? All those that died in the third angel’s message—keeping the Sabbath—and those that pierced Him. Matthew 26:63, 64 and Revelation 1:7.
[2] These are the "some to everlasting life" and "some to shame " et cetera.
[3] It is only after this that the saints hear the day and hour of Jesus coming. "The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus’ coming, and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people. Like peals of loudest thunder His words roll through the earth. The Israel of God stand listening, with their eyes fixed upward. Their countenances are lighted up with His glory, and shine as did the face of Moses when he came down from Sinai. The wicked cannot look upon them. And when the blessing is pronounced on those who have honored God by keeping His Sabbath holy, there is a mighty shout of victory." Great Controversy, p. 640:2.
* Glorified does not equal immortal because Moses was glorified before the people; but he died later.
* It is after this special resurrection that they become glorified to the extent as Moses was when he came down from Mount Sinai.
* Then we are changed from glory to glory until we shall be able to stand in the glory of Jesus our Saviour.
[4] But how many are alive at this time when they hear this day and hour? "Soon we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming.
The living saints, 144,000 in number, knew and understood the voice, while the wicked thought it was thunder and an earthquake. When God spoke the time, He poured upon us the Holy Ghost, and our faces began to light up and shine with the glory of God, as Moses’ did when he came down from Mount Sinai." Early Writings p 15:0.
[5] Is this in number literal or figurative?
[a] How many prophets did Jezebel have on Mount Carmel? 1 Kings 18:19.
[b] Let us see how the Spirit of Prophecy uses this term "in number" relative to this event? "Jezebel’s prophets, eight hundred and fifty in number, like a regiment of soldiers prepared for battle, marched out in a body with instrumental music and imposing display." Vol. 3, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 279-280.
[c] How many thousands of false prophets were on that Mountain? 850 in number means that you could count them till that number not figuratively.
[d] Therefore, 144,000 in number means a literal number.
(e) It is at this very time, when the 144,000 are all together, that the time of Jacob’s trouble is ended and the saints are delivered. "About four months since, I had a vision of events, all in the future. And I saw the time of trouble, such as never was,—Jesus told me it was the time of Jacob’s trouble, and that we should be delivered out of it by the voice of God. Just before we entered it, we all received the seal of the living God. Then I saw the four Angels cease to hold the four winds. And I saw famine, pestilence and sword, nation rose against nation, and the whole world was in confusion. Then we cried to God for deliverance day and night till we began to hear the bells on Jesus’s garment. And I saw Jesus rise up in the Holiest, and as he came out we heard the tinkling of bells, and knew our High Priest was coming out. Then we heard the voice of God which shook the heavens and the earth, and gave the 144,000 the day and hour of Jesus’s coming. Then the saints were free, united and full of the glory of God, for he had turned their captivity. And I saw a flaming cloud come where Jesus stood and he laid off his priestly garment and put on his kingly robe, took his place on the cloud which carried him to the east where it first appeared to the saints on earth, a small black cloud, which was the sign of the Son of Man. While the cloud was passing from the Holiest to the east which took a number of days, the synagogue of Satan worshipped at the saints feet." The Day-Star, March 14, 1846:2.
[1] A part of this statement is quoted in Vol. 7, SDA Bible Commentary, p. 968.
[2] Notice that this deliverance did not take place at the special resurrection when the voice of God is also heard, but at the time that they hear the day and hour of Jesus’s coming and also hear the voice of God at that time.
b. In 1899, some men who passed 90 were sealed. "There are living upon our earth men who have passed the age of fourscore and ten. The natural results of old age are seen in their feebleness. But they believe God, and God loves them. The seal of God is upon them, and they will be among the number of whom the Lord has said, ‘Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.’ With Paul they can say, ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also which love his appearing.’ There are many whose gray hairs God honors because they have fought a good fight and kept the faith." (1899) Vol. 7, Bible Commentary p 982:1.
(1) They will be among the number of those in Revelation 14:13.
E. Belief of the Pioneers
1. Uriah Smith and John Loughborough are listed among the Pioneers. "We can easily count the first burden bearers now alive [1902]. Elder [Uriah] Smith was connected with us at the beginning of the publishing work. He labored in connection with my husband. We hope always to see his name in the Review and Herald at the head of the list of editors; for thus it should be. Those who began the work, who fought bravely when the battle went so hard, must not lose their hold now. They are to be honored by those who entered the work after the hardest privation had been borne. . .
"I am thankful that Elder [J.N.] Loughborough can still use his abilities and his gifts in God’s work. He has stood faithful amid storm and trial. With Elder Smith, my husband, Brother Butler, who joined us at a later period, and yourself [S. N. Haskell], he can say, ‘That which was from the beginning, . . . that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his son Jesus Christ’ (1 John 1:1-3). . .
"A few of the old standard-bearers are still living. I am intensely desirous that our brethren and sisters shall respect and honor these pioneers. We present them before you as men who know what trials are. I am instructed to say, Let every believer respect the men who acted a prominent part during the early days of the message, and who have borne trials and hardships and many privations. These men have grown gray in service. Not long hence they will receive their reward." Vol. 2, Selected Messages, pp. 225:2; 225-226; 226-227.
2. "Those who die after having become identified with the third angel’s message, are evidently numbered as a part of the 144,000; for this message is the same as the sealing message of Revelation 7, and by that message only 144,000 were sealed. But there are many who have had their entire religious experience under this message, but have fallen in death. They die in the Lord, and hence are counted as sealed; for they will be saved. But the message results in the sealing of only 144,000; therefore these must be included in that number. Being raised in the special resurrection (Daniel 12:2; Revelation 1:7) which occurs when the voice of God is uttered from the temple, at the beginning of the seventh and last plague (Revelation 16:17; Joel 3:16; Hebrews 12:26), they pass through the period of that plague, and hence may be said to come ‘out of great tribulation’ (Revelation 7:14), and being raised from the grave only to mortal life, they take their stand with believers who have not died, and with them receive immortality at the last trump (1 Corinthians 15:52), being then, with the others, changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. Thus, though they have passed through the grave, it can be said of them at last, that they are ‘redeemed from among men’ (Revelation 14:4), that is, from among the living; for the coming of Christ finds them among the living, waiting for the change to immortality, like those who have not died, and as if they themselves had never died." Daniel and Revelation, p. 634 Berean Library Edition.
"The sealing work of Revelation 7 results in sealing the number here specified; but as this is identical with the third angel’s message, this sealing work has for many years already been going forward; and some whose whole religious experience has been connected with, and is owing to, this work, have fallen asleep since the message commenced. Will they be reckoned with this 144,000? If so, how can it be said that they will be redeemed from among men, or be translated?
"We answer, Before Christ comes, there is a partial resurrection to take place, according to Daniel 12:2 and Revelation 1:7. Daniel says, ‘Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ This is not the general resurrection of either class; for at the general resurrection of the righteous there are no wicked ones to be raised, and at the general resurrection of the wicked there are no righteous ones included. But here is a mixed resurrection, taking some, a few, of both classes; and this occurs in connection with the standing up of Michael, and the closing time of trouble. We therefore infer that at this time, probably when the voice of God is heard (Joel 3:16, Hebrews 12:27, and Revelation 16:17), some of the preeminently wicked, and some of the preeminently good, including all those who have died in the third angel’s message, will be raised from the dead, but raised only to mortal life. Being then raised from the dead, and taking their place with those who have not died under this message, they are translated when the Lord appears; and hence, with the others, may also be said to be redeemed from among men." Synopsis of the Present Truth, 318:2-319:1.
J. White: "Those who die under the third angel’s message are a part of the 144,000; there are not 144,000 in addition to these, but these help make up that number. They are raised to mortal life shortly before Christ comes, and . . . are changed to immortality when Christ appears." Review and Herald, September 23, 1880. [SDA Bible Commentary Encyclopedia (1976 edition) page 1030.]
"From this we may recognize that, at the coming of the Lord, all of the 144,000, as living saints, will be composed of those who have never seen death and those who have died during the preaching of the last message but have resurrected before the appearing of the Lord." Sabbath School Lesson, August 1,1908.
III. Conclusion
1. We are not saved till we are sealed. "The Lord would teach man the lesson that though united in church capacity, he is not saved until the seal of God is placed upon him." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 969:3.
a. Only the sealed have the passport through gates of Holy City. "Only those who receive the seal of the living God will have the passport, through the gates of the Holy City." Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 970:1.
2. Let us strive to be among 144,000. "Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be among the hundred and forty-four thousand." (Review and Herald, March 9, 1905) Vol. 7, Bible Commentary, p. 970:9.
a. Let us look at the word among as used in the Bible. Numbers 17:6.
(1) Were there 13 rods or only 12? Numbers 17:8.
(a) Aaron’s rod was for the house of Levi.
(b) This means that the house of Levi had only one rod, and that rod was Aaron’s.
(c) That makes only 12 rods.
(d) Among, in this case means a part of.
b. Does "among" mean not a part of in the Spirit of Prophecy? "The Saviour did not repulse Judas. He gave him a place among the twelve." Desire of Ages, p. 717:0.
(1) "I was shown that the fact that Judas was numbered among the twelve, with all his faults and defects of character, is an instructive lesson, one by the study of which Christians may be profited." Vol. 4, Testimonies for the Church, p 41:1, 3.
(2) Were there 13 disciples or only 12 with Judas among them (inclusive)?
IV. Additional Notes
1. Latter rain does not fall till we are sealed. "Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost." Vol. 5, Testimonies for the Church, p. 214:2.
2. Can a child be sealed since that child was not tested? "The destroying angel is soon to go forth again, not to destroy the first -born alone, but ‘to slay utterly old and young, both men, women and little children’ who have not the mark. Parents, if you wish to save your children, separate them from the world, keep them from the company of wicked children; for if you suffer them to go with wicked children, you cannot prevent them from partaking of their wickedness and being corrupted. It is your solemn duty to watch over your children, to choose the society at all times for them. Learn your children to obey you, then can they more easily obey the commandments of God, and yield to his requirements. Don’t let us neglect to pray with, and for our children. He that said, ‘Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not,’ will listen to our prayers for them, and the seal, or mark, of believing parents will cover their children, if they are trained up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." Review and Herald, September 19, 1854:13.
3. Who is the Great Multitude? "Now Christ again appears to the view of His enemies. Far above the city, upon a foundation of burnished gold, is a throne, high and lifted up. Upon this throne sits the Son of God, and around Him are the subjects of His kingdom. The power and majesty of Christ no language can describe, no pen portray. The glory of the Eternal Father is enshrouding His Son,. The brightness of His presence fills the City of God, and flows out beyond the gates, flooding the whole earth with its radiance.
"Nearest the throne are those who were once zealous in the cause of Satan, but who, plucked as brands from the burning, have followed their Saviour with deep, intense devotion. Next are those who perfected Christian characters in the midst of falsehood and infidelity, those who honored the law of God when the Christian world declared it void, and the millions, of all ages, who were martyred for their faith. And beyond is the ‘great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, . . . before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.’ Revelation 7:9. Their warfare is ended, their victory won. They have run the race and reached the prize. The palm branch in their hands is a symbol of their triumph, the white robe an emblem of the spotless righteousness of Christ which now is theirs." Great Controversy, p. 665:1,2.
4. Those who come in at the loud cry will endure the time of trouble. "Some, I saw, have a prejudice against our rulers and laws; but if it were not for law, this world would be in an awful condition. God restrains our rulers; for the hearts of all are in His hands. Bounds are set, beyond which they cannot go. Many of the rulers are those whom Satan controls; but I saw that God has His agents, even among the rulers. And some of them will yet be converted to the truth. They are now acting the part that God would have them. When Satan works through his agents, propositions are made, that, if carried out, would impede the work of God and produce great evil. The good angels move upon these agents of God to oppose such propositions with strong reasons, which Satan’s agents cannot resist. A few of God’s agents will have power to bear down a great mass of evil. Thus the work will go on until the third message has done its work, and at the loud cry of the third angel, these agents will have an opportunity to receive the truth, and some of them will be converted, and endure with the saints through the time of trouble. When Jesus leaves the most holy, His restraining Spirit is withdrawn from rulers and people. They are left to the control of evil angels. Then such laws will be made by the counsel and direction of Satan, that unless time should be very short, no flesh could be saved." Vol. 1, Testimonies for the Church, pp. 203-204.
5. "God calls upon those who hold responsible positions in Sabbath school work to put away all egotism, all self-confidence, and pride of opinion; if a message comes that you do not understand, take pains that you may hear the reasons the messenger may give, comparing scripture with scripture, that you may know whether or not it is sustained by the word of God. If you believe that the positions taken have not the word of God for their foundation, if the position you hold on the subject cannot be controverted, then produce your strong reasons; for your position will not be shaken by coming in contact with error. There is no virtue or manliness in keeping up a continual warfare in the dark, closing your eyes lest you may see, closing your ears lest you may hear, hardening your heart in ignorance and unbelief lest you may have to humble yourselves and acknowledge that you have received light on some points of truth." Counsels on Sabbath School Work pp. 28-29.
6. "Some, I was shown, could receive the published visions, judging of the tree by its fruits. Others are like doubting Thomas; they cannot believe the published Testimonies, nor receive evidence through the testimony of others; but must see and have the evidence for themselves. Such must not be set aside, but long patience and brotherly love should be exercised toward them until they find their position and become established for or against. If they fight against the visions, of which they have no knowledge; if they carry their opposition so far as to oppose that in which they have had no experience, and feel annoyed when those who believe that the visions are of God speak of them in meeting, and comfort themselves with the instruction given through vision, the church may know that they are not right. God’s people should not cringe and yield, and give up their liberty to such disaffected ones. God has placed the gifts in the church that the church may be benefited by them; and when professed believers in the truth oppose these gifts, and fight against the visions, souls are in danger through their influence, and it is time then to labor with them, that the weak may not be led astray by their influence." Vol. 1 Testimonies for the Church, pp. 328-329.
7. "Men and women professing godliness and expecting translation to heaven without seeing death, I warn you to be less greedy of gain, less self-caring." (1867) Vol. 1 Testimonies for the Church p. 482:1.
